The PSU BOT final flipping the bird to the Paterno family and making sure Joe and his name are never shown again on anything with the football program. Especially making sure that field is never called Joe Paterno Field. Surprised Brandon Short actually went against the majority.

Don’t sell him short. He still managed to act like a buffoon.

Outside of trying to be successful in todays college football and securing the largest field naming rights deal in college football…..you’re 100 percent right.

Great day for PSU football.
Should have been.

But the “how” is often more important than the “what.” This is an issue of enormous alumni interest, and trying to sneak it past everyone is yet another leadership fail.

OK, so I will play Devil's Advocate on this....

The members of the BoT were voted in - so they represent many groups including alumni. So, it is their vote that speaks for the alumni (along with the Governor's office and a host of other groups).

What do the BoT bylaws say? Do they say that naming rights or any other specific subject matter requires the general alumni involvement? If so, then yes, they should have had the alumni involved in the decision. If not - well then this is how governance works. And if you don't like it, you rectify it by making sure not to vote those people in next time. (or push that specific group that is represented to not appoint them).

Just out of curiousity, was the naming of the stadium on a meeting Agenda that was made public? Did it need to be?

If it's not in the Bylaws or mandated to be on an Agenda, I don't see it as a leadership fail. It's how governing bodies operate.

I also don't like the name and wish they would have honored Joe, but the Paterno family is not going to give the University $3.3MM per year for 15 years.

BTW, @Tom McAndrew or whomever, can we join the threads of Stadium Naming Rights and the BoT vote?

I appreciate your point(s) here, RO. The issue I have with it is that the discussions regarding naming of the field for Paterno family were not provided with the same opportunity. And while it may have happened within the guidelines of the current bylaws, it appears that discussion of the project was kept secret — even from the same alumni trustees you reference.

I can’t in good conscience hold someone accountable for being ambushed.

I have not read article yet. What company did they approve for naming tights? Or is it still hush for now?

Just to continue my thoughts.....

Not everything is open to the public on public meetings. Most every public governing body have an "Executive Session". It's within these Executive Sessions that sensitive issues, usually involving legal issues, personnel matters and sensitive financial issues, are discussed. Votes associated with it are public however.

I have no idea if the actions associated with the naming was senstiive enough to be in an Executive Session though. I would imagine some would say "yes" and most would feel "no" since, to be honest, Penn State football and the associated aspects of it (including the stadium) are what represent this University more than anything else.

What’s concerning is that this was single sourced. It doesn’t sound like bids were received on the naming rights. It was a back room deal with WSH. we will never know what money was left on the table, or whether those in favor of naming it after JVP could have proposed a financial package for the naming rights. This smells like an end around to kill any further discussion on naming it after Paterno.

Exactly they were caught off guard when Lubrano tried to change the field name to Paterno so they had to move quickly to get this deal locked down before the ground wave for naming the field after Joe picked up any steam or the horror to think to put it out for a vote to the alumni

And that is a valid point if naming rights have to be put out to bid. I have not seen that in other public projects I have worked on, but perhaps you are correct.

Barry, is there a difference in the approval process for a paid-rights naming, vs. an honorary naming? For example, if PSU wanted to name a building or space for a distinguished alumni or other person who made significant contributions in their field, but with no monetary contributions included, does it need more than the President's ok to do so?
Thanks.

If you want to maximize the revenue, you’d at least let it be known that naming rights are available to more than one entity. It doesn’t sound like that took place with Beaver Stadium.

I’d rather name the stadium after Joe than the field…$50 million seems like a good deal for PSU for it, but it was pulled together rather quickly and rushed in my opinion (at least in terms of the amount of time the Trustees had to review it).

Exactly... they had to lock this down quickly before any steam would pick up to name it after Joe. Why 1 offer was accepted and was done behind closed doors like everthing the BOT does...
