Stansbury went on to defend his scheduling – State’s strength of
schedule was in the low 100s before Sunday; now it’s 74th – and cited
road games against Houston (win), San Diego (win) and Western Kentucky
(loss), as well as games versus <span class="caps">UCLA</span> (Wooden
Classic in Anaheim, Calif.) and DePaul (<span class="caps">SEC</span>/Big
East Challenge in Tampa), both wins.

“First off, I don’t
understand the strength of schedule. How some of these teams from these
smaller leagues have such a good strength of schedule, but we play 16 <span class="caps">SEC</span> games. And besides our 16 <span class="caps">SEC</span>
games, we had eight games non-conference away from home. Away from
home. I don’t know if there’s another <span class="caps">BCS</span> team
in America that did that.”</p>

How many Top 50 RPI teams did the SEC finish with this year? UK, UT, Vandy? Being in the West and as craptastic as it has been, we only had 3 games (ignoring the SECT) in the SEC this year that potentially could look good to the committee - and we lost them all.

I think you are playing a stronger hand at this time of year if we supplement our SEC schedule with quality non-conference. It sucks, but being in the SEC isn't going to get us in the NCAAT by itself.

Maybe the answer is, "Well, we scheduled UCLA and Depaul this year, we can't help it if we caught them on down years". I could maybe buy into that and chalk it up to bad luck. But, I think banking on the "toughness" of those 16 SEC games is selling us short (unless we were in the East) and setting us up for disappointment.

This doesn't really surprise me, and I don'tmean that in an insulting way. His job is to coach basketball and recruit, not understand mathematical formulas that determineSOS.

Considering that, there's no excuse for not having someone in the AD that can help him out.Stansbury should obviously have plenty of say in the schedule, but have someone who understands this side of itthat cantell himwhether each of his scheduling options would likely help or hurtour SOS/RPI. I don't think this would require even close to a full-time position. I'm sure there is someone already in the AD that can handle it.

If we already have someoneto help him like this and he is too stubborn or otherwise ignoresthe advice, then he doesn't get to play the "I don't understand it" card, but I've never read anything to suggestthat is the case.

I am not a Stansbury hater like most on here but he is so 17ing hard headed and almost sounds like he is not interested in learnign or understanding why we didn't get in.

He sounds uninterested in looking at how weak our schedule is.

Counting a game in Jackson amongst those eight. Technically correct. Like UCLA claiming the Wooden game as a neutral court game though.

the conference he plays in. He also needs to manipulate the RPI and not play #330 4 times. We need to avoid those type games but he also needs to play more big nameteams. Our schedule tells me the coaches try to do just enough on the scheduling front which means we have to win almost all our games. Well, we won 23 and didn't get in so there needs to be some serious evaluation of the non conference schedule.

Depaul has had one winning season in the last 5, and havent even made it to 10 wins the last 2- how 17'ing hard is it to figure out they arent going to help your SOS?

He is just spinning trying to look better. He knows we play a soft schedule- and we do almost every year

he made the exact same arguement after we won 20+ games with Tang, Tyrone, and Detric. That was a tourney team, but our schedule was too weak to get us in.

By the same token, the year we beat Arizona with Antonio Jackson, we were one win in the SECT away from getting a bid even though that team was not very good in my opinion.

I will defend him in one respect though. The committee members probably did not have our updated strength of schedule of 74 or our updated RPI. I'm not sure the committee was really able to digest our 3 day run in the tourney. Neutral site games should be a big factor and we were 5-2 on neutral courts (not counting Jackson) against 5 NCAA tourney teams.

Wasn't it part of that SEC/Big East Invitational? Not that it makes a big difference either way, but he didn't schedule them so you can't criticize him on not knowing DePaul's history

Which is why it is completely asinine for the SEC to schedule the tourney Thursday through Sunday. Other power conferences finish on Saturday. Why can't the SEC?

...is not some big badge of honor anymore. There is no elite Arkansas in our division. Nor is there a strong Alabama, Auburn, or LSU like there used to be. He's stuck in the past when the SEC was a 6-7 bid league.

The reality is that in the committee's eyes, the quality of basketball in the SEC has gone down dramatically. Stansbury refuses to acknowledge that.

than I did yesterday when you posted that Byrne should take scheduling completely away from Stand. I 100% agree with that assessment and move that it be passed by acclimation.

I may be wrong but I don't think we had much say in the Bethune-Cookman and TX Pan American games as it was set by the tournament we played in. You could make the case we shouldn't play these tournaments without guaranteed quality opponents, but Stans did not go and out purposely schedule those 2 teams.

If they were worth two ***** this year, our RPI and SOS would have been much better. The SEC needs to get better as a basketball league.

Considering they just got a completely undeserved bid - and a 10 seed at that, I think that's pretty obvious. We had no choice who we played. They even made us play in flipping Florida.

Didn't the conferences set up these matchups?
I'm sure the schools are looped in, but at the end of the day, these match-ups are madeby the networks through the league offices. Which makes this whole DePaul argument incredibly stupid.

Of course, MSU has a number of fans thatdon't know **** aboutbasketball that like to post **** about basketball.

I don't recall what year (early 2000s?) it was but State was left out of the tourny for the same SOS reasons. Stansbury was on CBS afterward and was asked about improving the SOS, he basically said there was nothing wrong with his schedule's strength. The announcer (Nantz I believe) was nearly speechless because the selection committee spokesperson had JUST SAID that State's SOS was an issue.

Bury would have a case. But it's not. If hasn't figured it out by now, he never will. Please Bryne, take over the scheduling.
