Starkville HS FB question

Just a quick question for anyone on the "inside" who may have a legitimate answer....

What the CRAP has happened to the Starkville High football team? I sat through the first half in Batesville last night because I have family that lives in Starkville, a young nephew on the staff, wanted to visit, blah, blah... and I just could not believe what I was seeing. It wasn't THAT long ago that they were one of the premier 5A teams in the north, if not the state. They may be one of the worst high school teams I've ever seen. They had -1 yards of offense after the fourth quarter started. I watched them play DeSoto Central in Starkville earlier in the year in what is easily the worst high school game I've ever witnessed. I know the weather was atrocious, but SP was playing on the same field as they were (and they have turf, mind you). Anybody got any anwers/insight?

They just don't have the talent that used to be abundant. From what I hear the junior high teams have done well this year, so there's hope for the future. However, in all likelihood it'll be handled under a different head coach. Coach Lee doesn't seem to be as involved as he once was, for whatever reasons. And as I've said here before, athletic interest at Starkville High has shifted from football to basketball during the past few years. This is due to the efforts of Coach Greg Carter, who's much more involved than Lee in getting students to come out and play. The number of kids who tried out for basketball far exceed the number of players on the current football roster. The emergence of Travis Outlaw has aided this as well.

Surprisingly enough, if they beat Columbus next week, SHS will make the playoffs as the four seed, which says more about the once dominant Region 1-5A (now 6A). IF that happens, they'll travel to Madison and get their asses handed to them big time.

What was the final of the SP game last night?
