Newsflash: Starkville is a wonderful town
I bartended in Starkville and Oxford.
The only difference between Ole Miss and State nightlife is when you go to an Ole Miss party, everyone is brainwashed to ask you “Doesn’t Ole Miss throw the best parties?” Good God, I feel like I’m stuck in the Truman Show when I go hang out in Oxford. Wes Rucker was right. Ole Miss is unauthentic.
The Cotton District, the Junction, it all has similar if not better offerings than the square or the grove. All college towns have their own special unique flair and Starkville is no different. Main Street/Cotton District has everything you could want within walking distance. The other bars that are spread out provide a more diverse nightlife experience. That’s better than one cognate location. Stories of nightlife are better going to more spread out places in Starkville than going to the centralized square in Oxford.
So State Theatre closed. Zorba’s is better and has replaced it. Zorba’s can hold nearly half of what State Theatre could. Plus StaggerIn can similarly hold a ton of people and is in the heart of the Cotton District.
Personally I like the Cotton District more than the square. Cotton District is more laid back. Plus there are a ton of bars within two blocks. And where else can you get FREE BURRITOS on random nights? Not on the square.
Steakonastick’s mini-Bourbon street idea for Cotton District/Main Street would be a killer idea btw. It would kill the square.
Fact: Ole Miss students come to Starkville more often than you think. Ask any current students.
Food? Restaurant Tyler or The Veranda blows Boure or Ajax out of the water.
Burgers? Mugshots is constantly ranked the number 1 burger in the state.
Pizza? Dave's or Stromboli's. Need I say more?
Ladies? Ole Miss is great if you're into fake blondes and cougars trying to their hardest to be in shape and coming across as teenagers.
Alumni with money? MSU has PLENTY.
Hope this helps!
