Starkville now more populus than Columbus.

It's almost like being on another planet to have the "Sparkle" of Starkville outshine the ex-giant to the east.
Some parts of it are beautiful, like the area around and just south of downtown. Then a lot of the rest is a real ********. For a town that size, they do have a real good restaurant selection, which is real nice when you spend about 1 month per year there on business.
As far as population inside the city limits. However, Lowndes County has another 30,000+ that live outside the city limits of Columbus that work, eat, do business in Columbus every day. Oktibbeha County doesn't have that kind of populus outside of Starkville.
tell. It all depends on the circumstances. Take Vicksburg, for example. The population is probably around 25-26,000 but the entire county feeds into the city as there is no other town of significance nearby. I know at one time the county was 55,000 and that may have grown, and Vburg pulls from Sharkey/Issaquena some and also across the river.
Yep, there are certainly distinctive areas of Columbus: the downtown area, which they've put a lot of money and effort into restoring and maintaining it; then Hwy 45 North which is your typical "let's cram every new commercial property onto this one road and not improve the infrastructure"; and then East Columbus, which is probably the main hellhole to which you were referring.
As a native and current resident of Columbus (only for another month), it's kind of sad to see the town not really take off like it could, because it has some potential, certainly with the base that's there. With the new businesses that have come in around the airport perhaps it will take off then, and if the proposed mall at the 45 South exit becomes reality once the economy turns around.

In the downtown area, J. Broussard's is very good; the food is New Orleans style. Harvey's and Cafe on Main and is pretty good too.
On 45, you have Old Hickory Steak House and the usual chain restaurants like Applebee's and Chili's. Another really good place is Proffitt's Porch, which is off the beaten path - you have to turn onto Wilkins-Wise Road like you're going to the Lock and Dam and take a right on Officers Lake Road and go down a little ways.

of the place that is right by the Tombigbee that is a seafood place? It has flooded a few times. It was pretty good 10 years ago, whenI last ate there. Is it still there, and is still any good?
Cafe on Main (corner of Main & 5th) - excellent plate lunch.
Hucks (5th St. South) - good burgers and po-boys, decent plate lunch. The Hucks burger is 3/4 lb and it the only burger I literally could not eat. Every time I took a bite it pushed the burger out the back side of the bun. But if that's not big enough for you, you can get a double Hucks burger.
Zachary's (5th St. North) - good burgers and wraps.
Sante Fe Cattle Co. - chain type, peanuts on the floor, steaks southwestern food seafood etc., but very good.
Hickory Pit - 0 atmosphere but some of the best char-grilled steaks you'll ever eat. Menu selection is very limited. If you eat there, you're eating steak. Ribeye's, Strips, Filets, they're all outstanding.
Reubens - it's a decent catfish place. Nothing special.
Proffit's Porch - interesting place in the middle of nowhere (but only a few miles from town) located next to a pond. Pretty good food and a nice setting.
Then you've got a lot of the same places Starkville has like Harvey's, The Grill, Sweet Peppers, Mi Hacienda, etc. The one place I would not recommend is Chili's. The service there has been terrible. It's one of the very few restaurants I've ever just walked out of before our food came out.

Or in this instance, Columbus, I realize that all my bitching about the lack of restaurants in Oxford is relative.
As dawgfan77 said, it's Ruben's. I haven't eaten there in 3 or 4 years, but it was pretty decent then. I've heard several folks say it's not as good as it used to be, though.</p>
Yeah. Just eat in Starkville. The best place in Columbus is Giribaldi's but if you want Mexican, Mi Hacienda in Starkville (while not quite as good as Giribaldi's) more than makes up for the 56 mile round trip. The second best place in Columbus is Proffits Porch which is a take-off on Oby's. Again, why drive that far instead of just going to Oby's? They did open a Krystal on 45 north this past year if your're in the mood for gut grenades. They may have some good places but there are better places in the Jewel hands down.
Columbus has some of my favorite places to eat in the Golden Triangle. The first being Peking, chinese restaurant on Hwy 45 in front of Leigh Mall. Proffit's Porch would be second. Good sandwiches, it's been a couple of years since I've been there, but my next trip to Starkville will definitely include a lunch trip to Proffit's. Mexican Kitchen is awesome as well. There is a steak place in East Columbus that's pretty good, but I can't remember the name.
But the Hattiesburg-Laurel-Oak Grove-Petal area is up around 180,000-200,000. Simply because Hattiesburg stopped incorporating out West. This really means nothing that Starkville is ahead of Columbus. Most people are leaving the city of Columbus because it is a ********. The county still has more people than Ok. County.
I was surprised when I read this, right after I'd made a trip to Columbus earlier that day. The streets were packed, and while some of Columbus is a hellhole, compared to Starkville in the summer it's like a metropolis. They probably did the census during the year (when school is in) and so I'm sure a lot of students were counted.
The real crux is that people who live in Starkville go to Columbus a lot. Neither town has much to brag about, but for shopping and stuff and dining Starkville people go to Columbus. I've had several professors who only go to Columbus bars/restaurants because they can smoke in the bars and so they don't have to be surrounded by kids all the time.

Templeton's & Millsaps went out after about 50 yrs in business. Most people move out of Columbus to put their kids in better school districts like New Hope & Caledonia. There are about 20,000 more people that live in Lowndes county than Oktibehaw (sp ) has.Lowndes County has way more factories, the air base, GTR airport going on more than starkville. All Starkville has is MSU. Starkville will never catch Columbus.
There's a nice (read: upscale) place out from Columbus that is very good if you're ever in the mood for that sort of thing.
