Dude I despise Mark Pope as a coach. He’s the worst thing to ever happen to Kentucky basketball history. He’s a fraud and he’s a tool
The fairest take on Pope is that his imprint on being successful is yet undetermined, but he gives absolutely zero vibes that he's going to get this thing where it needs to be to satisfy the fanbase. It's a potentially bad situation and could be like Mike Tomlin where he treads water just enough to hold on, meanwhile the credibility of the program waters down.
General John Pope was really close to winning some battles in the Civil War as well. He didn't get it done, and Lincoln canned him.

Tomlin squeezed on in the year Brady was hurt. Not sure he got anywhere close in the next 15 years. He kept Pitt at 9-7 annually, which is the worst place to be in the NFL. First round exits or missing the playoffs altogether meanwhile never having a pick high enough to get your QB.
Pope going 25-10 with R32/S16's could be a deadly place to be w/him. You want him to blow up and go or crush it and surprise.

SEC is actually good these days, it was a laughing stock in basketball for the better part of the last 40 years. It only had 3 bids in 2016 and 2013 when Cal would regularly beat up on it. It had 14 in 2025, think about that.
If not for Florida, the SEC would have one title since 1996.
Don't look now, but Cal has his UK Model firmly in place. He may send 4 kids into this first round and is likely going to get a class of 4 top ten kids to replace them.
Tomlin only got that long because he won a title was my point. Pope ain't staying here long making sweet 16s or round of 32s.
I don’t know why anyone would choose to be mediocre while alienating our former players than being mediocre and not alienating our former players. If I knew it was going to be Mark Pope replacing our washed former coach, I’d rather have kept Cal. Things just really suck right now. There’s nothing to be happy about.
Fair assessment. If anyone had the choice now of the two, would clearly have kept Cal. There was a lot of equity lost and also two potentially great HS classes lost, by letting him go. Pope wasn't enough to move off him.

You’re giving him too much credit. We were tied with others at 7th place last year and were the 9 seed in the SECT. We played on Wednesday for the first time in history.

Pope is 1-1 against St. Cal lol. What's Pitino's record against St. Cal? Not very good. I can guarantee you 1 thing, Pope has forgotten more about offense than St. Cal will ever know, that man runs 3 plays, floppy action, screen for the guard to drive & pick & roll, once you stop those he's clueless. How many times did we ever see his team score after he draws up a play out of a timeout? Hardly ever. Pope's teams usually score after he draws up a play.
I'm glad Cal came here & won us a title but he was a recruiter more than a coach, still is, once coaches started using a modern offense & he pissed off Phil Knight at Nike, his days were numbered. If we're being honest, had it not been for Anthony Davis, he wouldn't even have the 1 title. All of that talent here & only 1 title. His coaching is exactly why.
Is Mark Pope the answer, I'd have to say a hard "no" but this is the best team he's ever assembled & I think they'll be a lot better than people are saying, he's never had guards that can create shots for others, now he has 2 of them.
Right now I'm more excited about football, we have a bright young offensive mind of a HC & as a season ticket holder I'm excited.
How? Pope hasn’t been coach of the year or won a conference regular season. Pope has won NOTHING. Billy won his conference and was coach of the year 3 times. 2 with big12, and 1 in the SEC.

Pope gets down double digits almost every game against a team with a pulse. Thats not good coaching.
And Cal had some good coaching moments here. People like u ignore what he did n 2011 after the ncaa screwed UK and took a basically 6 man team to the final four. And in 2014 when he took a bunch of freshmen and poy to the title game after losing wcs to injury.
He definitely should have won more than one title but we also got screwed n some close ncaa tourney losses to unc, ucinn and Wisconsin by the refs. Plus the key injuries in 2014 and 2015. Those injuries prevented a couple titles.
Yet people like u focus on Popes injuries knowing we weren't winning anything thst matters even healthy.
I cant believe we actually having fans pumping pope up over a guy who won a title, 4 final fours and 7 elite 8s.
Pope is the worst coach who got hired at UK. Gillispie had more success than he did before getting the job.
Let’s also not act like Gillispie was left anything at UK to work with outside of a raw Meeks. Pope has had the transfer portal and still hasn’t had success.
