Mississippi State is hot, no doubt about it. Sylvester Croom admits it. In fact, so does David Cutcliffe (just look at your offense). So why has Mississippi State gotten so little respect this season? Biased media? Racism? Regionalism? Incompetence? Whatever the case, look for the Bulldogs to come out swinging. If the Volunteers arent careful, they might wind up on their backs.

OFFENSE
Sylvester Crooms Bulldogs run the West Coast Offense. Look for the dynamic running back duo of Anthony Dixon and Christian Ducre to pound the ball up the middle all day long, with occasional dumps to NFL-caliber tight ends Dezmond Sherrod, Eric Butler, and Jason Husband. All-SEC possession receiver Lance Long could light up the Vols inexperienced secondary on any play, while JUCO transfers Tony Burks and Co-Eric Riley are sure to outhustle even the most tireless of cornerbacks. The loss of sturdy quarterback Michael Henig, who leads the Bulldogs in both passing yards and tackles per game, is sure to put a damper on offensive coordinator Woody McCorveys Make it Rain mentality, but true freshman Wesley Carroll should embarrass the defenders with 60+ yard bombs. Look for Matt Wyatt to take some snaps in clean up duty.

DEFENSE
Titus Brown, the most highly sought defensive end in SEC football history, is the anchor of the line. Hes joined by Kyle Love, Avery Hannibal, and Jessie Quantum Physics Bowman, who is widely respected for his play-to-play adjustments and his skills in audible cryptology. Gabe ONeal, Jamar Chaney, and Dominic Douglas make up the linebacker corps. ONeal and Douglas smother opposing receivers in short yardage situations. Chaney occasionally gives up moderate gains over the middle of the field, but his starting position is secure due to his strength of character and community service. Look for him to join the All State Good Works Team in the weeks to come. If the line is the brains of the defense and the linebackers are the muscle, the secondary is the heart. Anthony Johnson beat out Egg Bowl hero Jasper OQuinn for the starting nod at cornerback. Hes joined on the opposite side by Marcus Washington, a blazing speedster with hands like a baby. Demon Glanton has proven to be a force after his excellent coverage of Jimmy Johns in the Alabama game last year. If this season so far has been an indicator, Derek Pegues will score a touchdown on the first drive. Or two.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Coverage guru Amos Jones has left the Mississippi State family for greener pastures. While the Bulldogs are sure to drop off quite a bit in technique, they should make up the difference with raw talent. Though rumors of place kicker Adam Carlsons explosiveness have been floating around sports bars since early spring, the first half of the season has proven these rumors to be vast understatements. Think of a Southern Baptist Sebastian Janakowski who replaces steroids with hard work and Audio Adrenaline. Blake The Irish Bomber McAdams 40.75 yards per kick, though impressive, is misleading because Coach Croom, who collaborates with McAdams each Wednesday night before Wheel of Fortune, has come out with a patent of his own: the 3rd down, 31 yard line teaser. If teams are able to recover (and, oh how theyve tried), theyre faced with a red-blooded, American shot to the gut from projected 2nd rounder Jarvis Kyles. Pegues steps in as our return man. I get his special team touchdowns mixed up with his defensive ones, but theyre numerous. Just check his pictures on Facebook.
