State vs. Nicholls

Here's what I heard from two reliable sources. State's first base coach ran through the infield and stomped on first base while Nicholls tossed the ball around between innings. The first base coach also chastised Nicholls players in the dugout. Far from being simply enthusiastic and energetic, both Nicholls coaches and players considered the actions to be a classless and juvenile attempt at intimidation. They were surprised and said the first base coach reminded them of high school games. Coach Durham was pissed and thought it was disrespectful to his team. They also expected a bench-clearing fight to break out. One Nicholls player I talked to shook his head in disbelief; none of them can recall similar behavior from a college coach. Apparently, I've been informed, some State players are also embarrassed by and none-too-pleased with some of the coach's' behavior.

Regarding the Sunday game, during the morning Nicholls coaches noticed that the field was covered in snow and that the tarp couldn't be removed. Ole Miss and Alabama had cancelled their games so it surprised Coach Durham when State demanded Nicholls forfeit. Coach Durham had apparently had enough and didn't care-Nicholls opens conference play this weekend. I'm not sure that Nicholls wants to return to Starkville.

I'm glad Polk is gone but I hope we don't get a reputation for being bush league.

Not trolling. I have two degrees from State, I just rarely post. Thought some might be interested in what I heard from reliable sources.

So you don't approve... I yield to the verbal superiority of your gene-pagish response.

"State's first base coach ran through the infield and stomped on first base while Nicholls tossed the ball around between innings"

I didnt see any of that, but if he did, so what as far as stomping on the base? Ran thru the infield? No he didnt

"The first base coach also chastised Nicholls players in the dugout."

aGAIN, I doubt that happened, but if it did, they really must have been out of line with what they were doing or saying. Because it takes a whole helluva lot for an opposing coach to get on others teams players while they have all their coaches in the dugout

"One Nicholls player I talked to shook his head in disbelief; none of them can recall similar behavior from a college coach. Apparently, I've been informed, some State players are also embarrassed by and none-too-pleased with some of the coach's' behavior."

Yeah, because this is Cohen and his staff's first coaching job. They are inexperienced tools who have never led a top-flight college program before.

That post is an example of very wrong information being spread around

So you think it's incorrect and makes no sense? I talked to a couple of NSU players a few hours ago. Perhaps they lied to me, but I doubt it. They had no reason to and didn't even know I was a State grad. I had to explain the who left-field-lounge thingy to them and how we used to feed opposing team players after games (this was during the 1990s).

Perhaps they exaggerated. But, there remarks seemed convincing. It's a different perspective and one I was interested in hearing after I read Sunday's board.

It is interesting how the post is immediately rejected out of hand.

always stomps first base between innings. I don't know why, supersititon, maybe but I've seen him do that everytime he went out there. He did it for UNI and North Florida.

And why would a team be intimidated by the damn first base coach? Like he could do anything. If he did say something, they should have laughed at him, said <17> you and moved on.

I'll tell you what I have heard about the players and Cohen. I heard that while they miss Polk, they like playing for Cohen. If they don't like playing for him, they sure are doing a good job of fooling everyone. I've never seen a State team have so much playing the game, and it's one of the things that makes them fun to watch.

I'll say this- I do believe you, stay with me here- because you clearly talked to a player from Nicholls State, and I suspect that the team takes on the personality of their coach. See our team last year vs this year. In this case, their coach is clearly a whiny *****. Cohen's reputation clearly got in their heads, because it's pretty clear to me that they weren't as focused on playing baseball as they should have been. When you say that Mingione "chastised" their dugout, what exactly did he say to them?

Now, the State person who you talked to was probably one of Polk's old croonies who is more worried about looking classy than kicking *** and taking names. Personally, I'm enjoying kicking ***, even if it is Nicholls State.

And what happens at Ole Miss and Alabama is irrelevant weather wise. There is no doubt that our field was playable- uncomfortable weather, sure, but playable.

Also, if they're "worried about getting into a brawl", well they're pussies.

All of this said, welcome to the board KB21.

Our first base coach is famous for his run to 1st base and taunting other teams. Every inning Mengione runs around to first base and stands on the bag, cleaning it off and showing that it's his bag (watch for the rest of the year and you'll see). Thats why our players had the impression of Cohen as being "bush league" before he got here. When Mengione (sp) was at Kentucky he would yell at pitchers, hitters, hell anyone.

The guy was a prick when you were playing against him, but you'd like having him on your side. He'd try to do anything he can to mess with the opposition and get them off their game. If the opposing team is concentrating on him they aren't focusing on the game, and to him he's won.

from some college in New York? I don't think he was ever at UK.

After looking at his bio, he was indeed a volunteer assistant at UK. I stand corrected.

The players weren't "worried" about a fight--not sure why you added quotes--as far as I could tell. That might have been their only chance to win something. Durham's teams have been pretty dismal for a few years.

Didn't talk to one of Polk's guys.

Just offered some info and a different perspective.

They had no reason to lie? Yea right. Their coached pussed out on them and they are probably embarrassed as hell, as I would be. They are making some cowardly excuses to cover for their joke of a coach. Get real.

Some of these responses are hilarious. A few of you are taking this way too personally. Coach Durham is a grown man with kids. Whether or not he chooses to fight is irrelevant to his masculinity. Lighten up and stop watching professional wrestling for a few weeks.

He is a coach of a college baseball team! He gets paid to do what??? Yea thats right, coach baseball games. I don't care if he has kids or likes to fight. He can give his kid's team the 8th place badminton trophy for all I care. He looks like coward who wouldn't play a baseball game in a little cool weather.

I'm just pointing out that you believe that the Nicholls' State players have no reason to lie. They have all the reason in the world to lie. In no way Durham looks like the person in the right. All of the evidence adds up against him.

that a bunch of pussies like that would win a brawl against a Cohen lead team.

And why am I not surprised that Durham's teams have been pretty dismal?

If I was an AD, I would have fired him after this stunt.

Well their coach lied about the umpires not being able to show up and that we were going to have to use high school umps. So yeah, their coach is a liar and a team takes on the personality of their coach. Pussies and liars. Sounds about accurate to me...

why are you arguing NSs' point of view and calling your own coach bush league? I did not see where anyone was trying to fight like you said our coaches were. I think NS took exception to our aggressiveness and went home. Poor little fellows.

It was quite cold not just a little cold. Snow blanketed the field. If you want to be believed, then be honest and accurate. Maybe they still could have played.

The team opens conference play this weekend. He didn't want to risk an injury.

The Nicholls players don't have every reason to lie. They might have a few reasons but not every reason. And I don't think they lied. Perhaps there was some natural and expected embellishment. See the above comment about honesty and accuracy.

I'm sure Durham would be deeply depressed to read your opinion of him.

You don't know the complete story, nor do I. But the NCAA made a final judgment.

Again, the comments about someone being a coward or a ***** or a little ***** are hilarious. Leave the chest pounding for professional wrestling and the ridiculous world of hip hop. No diggity. Fo shizzle.

For all of you calling someone else a coward, enlist in the marines now. The U.S. needs some braves souls in Iraq and Afghanistan. Cheers to those who've already served.

to play baseball in cold weather.

And I would say that the fact that MSU had a full scrimmage on said field proves that the field was playable.

He certainly didn't have any problem with his fragile players playing 18 innings that field Saturday after 5+ inches of rain that didn't end until the early morning hours. Not to mention that if the field had turned out not to be safe to play on, the umpires would have suspended the game before it ever started.
