Here's what I heard from two reliable sources. State's first base coach ran through the infield and stomped on first base while Nicholls tossed the ball around between innings. The first base coach also chastised Nicholls players in the dugout. Far from being simply enthusiastic and energetic, both Nicholls coaches and players considered the actions to be a classless and juvenile attempt at intimidation. They were surprised and said the first base coach reminded them of high school games. Coach Durham was pissed and thought it was disrespectful to his team. They also expected a bench-clearing fight to break out. One Nicholls player I talked to shook his head in disbelief; none of them can recall similar behavior from a college coach. Apparently, I've been informed, some State players are also embarrassed by and none-too-pleased with some of the coach's' behavior.

Regarding the Sunday game, during the morning Nicholls coaches noticed that the field was covered in snow and that the tarp couldn't be removed. Ole Miss and Alabama had cancelled their games so it surprised Coach Durham when State demanded Nicholls forfeit. Coach Durham had apparently had enough and didn't care-Nicholls opens conference play this weekend. I'm not sure that Nicholls wants to return to Starkville.

I'm glad Polk is gone but I hope we don't get a reputation for being bush league.
