Statistical analysis of SEC only stats

The Bad: Hitting remains our problem. Through 12 games, we are 10th in SEC only games in batting average. We bat .249 as a team. WE LEAD THE LEAGUE IN STRIKEOUTS. We are 3rd in walks, good stat. The average for all hitters combined in SEC games is .262....which is brought down significantly by Ole Miss' team average. They are batting .216 as a team, 20 points lower than Kentucky. Pretty amazing. Runs scored we are 8th. It's interesting to note that Ole Miss has only scored 10 runs less than us...despite batting .33 less than us. It all goes back to strikeouts...they have 25 less strikeouts than us. It's important to note that we HAVE faced Arkansas, LSU, and Florida. Arkansas' team ERA in SEC play is 1.75, nasty. Statistically they are in the top half of the league in pitching so far. Unfortunately, we still face three more staffs like that-Vandy, Bama, and South Carolina.

The Good: We are the second best defensive team in the league. Interesting enough, Arkansas is the worst fielding team in the league and it's not really that close...couple their pitching staff with our defense and you have a national championship squad.

Pitching Observations: Our team ERA is 8th at 3.59. However, the only team to give up LESS hits than us has been Arkansas. We are 10th in strikeouts as a staff. Take the fact that we have the best team defense in the league...if we cut down on our walks, look for that team ERA to be in the top 3 at the end of the year. Vanderbilt leads the league in walks and it is not even close...gives me an indication that we could take two from Vandy. A team to worry about would be South Carolina...they lead the league in strikeouts at 109. The next team has 90. That's a home series that we could really struggle with due to our inability to put the ball in play.

It may sound TOO simple...BUT if we cut down on TWO stats, Team Batting strikeouts and Team Pitching walks, we are going to end up being a top 3 SEC team. These are both easily correctable. On, and Will James has a really good point about bunting. We have batted in 134 SEC innings. We have 95 strikeouts. If you put a bunt into the equation in an inning, you get yourself in trouble with our high K rate. It seems we have done a much better job though with not bunting in SEC play.

How do we stack up on on base percentage and slugging percentage? And where do the teams we've played stack up in team ERA?

We lead the league in % of innings scored in which our leadoff man reaches base... However we are 11th in number of leadoff men that have reached base.

Thats the issue, like Ive said since the LSU weekend

ETA: I didn't read rugb's whole post until after I posted. We only have 5 man on first no out bunts this year in league play(8th in SEC). We had 26 last year(1st in SEC). On pace to cut it by more than half. Cohen has seen light.

You're right. I messed up how much we walk...right in the middle.

As a team, batting in SEC play, we are 8th in walks (i.e. we walk at about an average rate).

As a team, pitching in SEC play, we are 4th in walks (i.e. we walk a lot of guys, bad stat).

Your first question would require me to go to every SEC team's website and compile stats...it would be real interesting to see, you wanna volunteer? I'm just commenting off the SEC website stats. They are very limited.

Do nothing to include SOS. No matter 'how' one compares, State has the toughest SEC scedule, missing the bottom teams.

How do these

and our batting averages, runs scored, stack up vs the other teams that have faced the same SEC squads we've faced? You obviously have a great deal more free time than me, this is why I ask. Just doing some quick searches, it looks like we have the highest BA vs LSU, most runs scored vs LSU, 2 highest BA and runs scored vs Arkansas, and highest BA vs Florida. Again, these were all SEC only.

So I looked at how we've done against our opponents, compared to the other SEC teams that have faced the same opponents. The "our offense is the worst ever" crowd would be surprised at the results.

I made the point before the season started that we seemed to really struggle working counts. I see us work our way into way too many 1-2 or 2-2 counts. I think the foundational issue is that we struggle to read pitches and anticipate location. I have no statistical analysis but I see us guarding the plate too much and guessing wrong on when to swing and when not to. I think that's a big reason for a lot of Ks.

Central Arkansas put on a clinic at the plate earlier this year. They had the best at bats of any team I've seen this far. It resulted in a lot of deep counts, which in turn resulted in getting on base. We should really be watching film on those guys.
