That stat is a little skewed b/c Relf had the first team WRs, specifically Bumphis. One pass gave him 70 yards and a TD.

And I also note the first reply is an excuse for Russell. "Relf had the first team WRs! WAAAH!!" I t should be pointed out they both had opportunities to run the first string today, per BDJ. Relf made big plays, Russell didn't. Pretty simple, really.

Relf is going to continue to make big plays in the passing game because he runs the ball so well and safeties cheat up....safeties dont cheat as much vs Russell because they don't fear the run- that means less big plays

Also, you see Russell only had 2 carries today and 4 yards...he simply isn't a runner

bottom line- Relf is clearly our QB

Why do people year after year make assumptions about player ability by looking at scrimmage statistics? Something I'll never understand.

to produce points or complete 50% of their passes showed everyone you can indeed judge results from scrimmages

Russell is a freshmen, he'll get better with experience, hell Peyton Manning had trouble as a freshmen so did Eli. Not sure if you ever played QB but I can tell you first hand it's the hardest position on the field and experience goes a long long ways! I'll bet he'll improve more than Relf as time goes on and I like Relf and the two headed QB.

a helluva tough position to play- no doubt

Russell is going to be a decent QB and get better without a doubt. And he will play this season. But he is clearly going to be the #2 QB in 2010 and 2011.

My comments are directed at Goat, Bonedaddy, JCDawgman, and others that have said Russell would start as a True Freshman....Bonedaddy went so far as to say Mullen couldnt afford to not play him last season. Then it was Russell was going to be the starter this Spring and he would show me how wrong I was about him not being a runner.

I think it says alot about how the coaches want our offense to run when you have a nobody like Relf outperforming a 4-star QB like Russell. Whats really shocking to me is that Relf is out passing Russell. Thats means its not even a QB race- because the running part is hands down Relf's....

Also, why is Stegall not getting any scrimmage reps?

I hope Ballard & Perkins can gain better than 2 ypc. Assuming Elliott & Relf rush for 600-800 yards each, we need the rest of those guys to add in another 600-800 yards combined.

Of our guys adjusting and just going up against a hell of a defensive front, they probably won't see much better during the season.

a. we have a pretty good defense

b. they see the same offense coming at them every practice, so they should play better against it

He is the playmaker right now, and one 70 yard play that accounts for a third of his total certainly does make a difference.

was moved to another position- ATH?

I share your opinion on the QB's. I don't think this is much of a race either- it's going to be Relf as the starter. What I don't understand is why a lot of MSU fans don't understand that a QB has to be DEVELOPED. We run a HUGE risk of ruining Tyler if we throw him out there too soon. If Russell goes out there and struggles, and we have to pull him it can ruin his confidence. Especially in the SEC, which in my opinion is the best conference is the nation as far as defenses go.

There aren't many freshmen- true or RS that start for ANY teams in D-I.

Honestly, I want Tyler to be the back-up this year and Relf to start for the sole reason that I think it is in the best interests of the team and Tyler. And for the record- I like Tyler Russell, I think he will be a good QB in time, and I have actually seen Russell play in person.

Because if so, I'm even more excited about Relf.

Like Coach says, if Relf can figure out how to improve his short and intermediate passing game- well, look out.

he got a few.. looks like just rushes though.

Fifth series for first team: Relf completes 40 yard pass to Henderson for a first down. Stegall then takes over on the series and rushes for four yards five yards and five yards for a first down. Gatling sacks Stegall two plays later and DePasquale misses a 43-yard field goal
.

Scrimmages are for the coaches to evaluate players and are very important. What I think is stupid are fans looking at statistics from the scrimmage and making assumptions about, well, everything.

Damn, do you have a problem with Russell because he managed to lead MHS to a victory over SP to put a blotch in their streak? Get over it, he's on your side now. Jeez!

a running QB. And yes I still think Russell will be a great QB one day. In fact coach I will go as far as saying (yes bookmark, tag or whatever this statement) that Russell will start at some point this year.<div>
</div><div>1. I don't think Relf can stay healthy all season. See his senior year.</div><div>2. I don't think Relf will stay out of trouble from now to November.</div><div>3. At some point Relfs decision making will get him pulled in favor of Russell. The question mark at that point will be what will Russell do once he gets his shot?</div><div>
</div><div>What disapoints me most about Russell are the statements I have heard/read that say the Russell isn't a leader. How the hell do you let that happen if you are him?</div><div>
</div><div>Also I am going to put much more stock in the spring game a week from now than this scrimmage. Once the stands are full how will they both respond? We have seen the bad response from Relf (Auburn) and the great response (Ole Miss, one drive against Arkansas.) How will Russell preform once on the field in front of thousands? The last time he had that chance he beat SP for a state championship. Just sayin'.</div><div>
</div><div>And I am going to go ahead and call it, once Relf startsstrugglingCoach34 will go into hiding. Count on it, that is textbook Coach34.</div>

You said Russell was going to start LAST year...and you were wrong. Then you said he was going to start this year when I said he didnt fit the system- and you are now wrong aGAIN....but no, you did not say he was a runner

Hiding???? I have been on this board 6 1/2 years and have over 17K in posts...i'm never gone very long. Especially now with the iphone, I can post while stocking condoms

nobody is bragging about posts and having an iphone. The point that you missed, as you routinely do, is that I don't do any running and hiding. Because when it comes down to big things like this, i'm rarely wrong. While I may not know all the rules of golf, and I may not get NBA draft projections down perfectly, when it comes to the big things of telling you who the QB is going to be in a Spread Option offense- i'm going to be right every 17'ing time. I coached the ****.

So, you were wrong last year. And you are wrong now. And you will be wrong when we kick-off against Memphis.

Stick to your strengths like cooking and decorating

It's about the same as folks wanting Cohen fired after 1 1/2 years, they don't get it or understand the game well enough. </p>

we are going to have to have a hell of a defensive line year in and year out to compete in the SEC W. Looks likewe're getting it.</p>

I did say:

1. He is not as good as Cam Newton- he's not
2. He is not an overly intelligent individual- he isn't
3. He had limited knowledge of our playbook- he did
4. He hit port-a-porties at practice from time to time- he did

But since Relf has come back from suspension and apparently stopped smoking alot of dope, he has played alot better. He was much better the last half of last season. And he has come out in Spring practice and showed he is working hard to improve his game. And we didnt sign Cam Newton.

Relf is the best thing we got going, and is better than Russell. I'm happy with it. I love a good option QB. Sleepy and John Bond are my favorite all-time QB's...hopefully Relf makes the list too
