“No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want
to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No
one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is
very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change
agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new
is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the
old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.</p>
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.
Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other
people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out
your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow
your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want
to become. Everything else is secondary.” Steve Jobs, Stanford commencement address, June 2005

RIP. I'm typing this on an iPad with an iPhone a foot away while I'm on the Internet and my Xbox is currently turned on. I'm pretty sure Mr. Jobs had an influence in all of these inventions I take for granted every day. RIP brother.

but it's nice to know he pretty much got to live to the end doing what he obviously loved. we should all be so fortunate.

He was constantly pushing the limits of technology which caused others to do the same.

Jobs was certainly a visionary, but he was also a notoriously ruthless boss. Gates has pledged to give his fortune away through his foundation. Jobs? Not so much.

I mean no disrespect towards the man, but I think everyone's love for him has more to do with their love for his products and the personality cult surrounding the company moreso than his actions.

and I said he had an influence. Just like Pepsi has an influence on Coke. He doesn't have to own it to influence it.

Gates is a very public guy... Whenever he gives away a fortune, he does so with cameras around. That's not bad, because I'm glad he's giving, but Jobs just doesn't have that personality, and he never has.<div>
</div><div>Jobs was always very private (and that's putting it lightly). The only time you saw him was on stage introducing a new apple product. I can almost guarantee that, even though no one can prove it, Jobs has given away just as much percentage wise, as Gates has. Why? because it makes a terrific tax write off...</div><div>
</div><div>But just because Jobs was never as public as Gates is the only reason why you never heard of that type of thing...</div>

I doubt you really meant it like that, but there's a common misconception that it's somehow beneficial to someone's bottom line to donate to charity and thus even amoral pragmatists will donate to charity. Mortgage interest is generally deductible, too, but you'll never see people refininancing to get a higher interest rate so they have a bigger write-off.<div>
</div><div>That said, it wouldn't surprise me if Jobs has made significant charitable contributions, but it wouldn't surprise me overmuch if he hasn't either. Jobs somewhat famously eliminated all philanthropic programs at Apple when he returned to control in 1997.As for him possibly giving the same, even as a percentage of his wealth, as Gates, I seriously doubt that. Gates has given 28 billion to charity, a staggering sum even considering his current estimated net worth of 59 billion. Furthermore, he has stated that he plans to leave more or less his entire fortune to charity rather than his children. </div><div>
</div><div>None of that is to necessarily bash Jobs. The man was a visionary and I firmly believe people should be entitled to do whatever the hell they want with their own money, whether I agree with it or not.</div>

It's strictly my opinion that no one cares about, and we will simply never know how much Jobs gave or didn't give... The point remains that it is ridiculous to call the guy out for not being as good of a guy as Gates when no one knows what he did because he was so private.

Broke businesses and people usually do not donate much to charity. But your point is valid, because it was his money. It really isn't anyone else's business to judge him off of that.

You'd have to give $3 to save $1 in taxes. But for the very rich an even bigger reason you'd have to be an idiot is that untilthe last couple of yearsthe phaseout on itemized deductions meant that you'd lose up to 80% of your deduction anyway, so you'd have to give $15 to save $1 in taxes.

In your first post you guaranteed something and now you say it's really something your guessing at. You need to recant the guarantee, I would think.

when some idiot makes the statement "oh, they'll just write it off and get a huge tax break."

If you ever find yourself making this statement, just shut the hell up. You don't know what you are talking about.

...I don't want to get taxed more".

I guess there might be a level below the poverty line where you are incented to stay poor (vs. kinda poor) so you can remain on the dole, but the people that usually ask this question are actually making money. It always makes me question how they were intelligent enough to make money in the first place.

The fact of the matter is the guy was a notoriously brutal boss with an illegitimate daughter on welfare that he refused to support.

He wasn't a saint, he just knew how to sell a product and idea better than anybody else.
