Aint no NY6 bowl happening even at 9-3
Do we deserve to be ranked or go to a good bowl game after losing to Illinois at home?

I get it the rankings are relative.. but has anyone actually watched a single one of our games this season and thought to themselves “this is a good football team” ?

Maybe the first 20 minutes of the Iowa game?

Every single series is agonizing no matter who the opponent is. There are a bunch of guys who play really hard on defense and some of them are pretty talented. But this has been an incredibly frustrating team to watch…

That‘s true, this team definitely does not pass the “eye test.” Last week was 57 minutes of ****** football and 3 minutes of great work by Dotson.

Yes. Many of the teams that are ranked have issues just like us. Not a top 15 team, but top 25 definitely. The committee says head to head and injuries matter. If that true, we should be ranked without a doubt, worts and all. Tell me the AD at Iowa being the head of the committee has no impact. I am sure he is all too happy to stick it too us because we dared have injured players in the game where their low life fans booed.

I suppose it doesn’t really matter, but the rankings make no sense. We beat Wisconsin on the road and auburn despite a slew of bad calls against us. And the committee is supposed to take injuries into account so Iowa shouldn’t be held against us too much.

yeah the Illinois loss was terrible (though also would have never happened without the Clifford injury) but given the above, it’s ridiculous we aren’t ranked. And frankly, we should be the highest 3 loss team.

If we run the table do we still end up behind Iowa and Wisconsin for the CFP rankings leading to bowl selection? Seems like that is how it is being set up. That Illinois loss is the gift that keeps on giving. Brewwwtal!!

If we run the table, considering who 2 of those 3 wins are against, can’t believe there’s any chance we don’t jump both Wiscy & Iowa (assuming neither of them beats OSU in Big 10 title game).

If Wisky runs the table, they will win the West so yeah we will finish behind them as we won't win the East.

Auburn. We looked pretty damn good against them. It seems like a lifetime ago however.

wasn’t the argument against us in2016 that you had to look at the whole body of work so the losses early in the season were worth just as much as the wins late? Or something like that

If they run the table to include winning Big 10, then absolutely, they’d be ranked higher. But if they win out regular season, but lose to OSU in title game (finishing with 4 losses) & we win out, PSU will be ranked higher. Little doubt in this.

also need additional losses from Iowa and Purdue. Potentially two from Iowa.

Purdue’s additional loss coming this weekend vs OSU. With Iowa, I think only 1 more loss would do it (unless they run table Reg season & that loss is in Indy). They would then get nod over PSU. But, I’m pretty confident Wiscy winning the West.

even though it clearly doesn’t matter elsewhere in the rankings I have a sneaking suspicion we are behind Iowa even if they lose again due to h2h.

Unless you're in the final top four it means nothing. Don't go down the recruit road. Those who want an education and to play ball will come. It will not dissuade recruits.

Just win and the rankings will take care of themselves. Hopefully the snub is a motivator to the team and made well known by the coaching staff.

I'm not a fan of the back end of these rankings (the methodology seems suspect and inconsistent), but the lesson is that you should never ever lose to Illinois.

There are other teams ranked with bad losses. Pitt lost to a 5-4 Mac team. They’re also going to make it through the season having played zero ranked teams.

Interesting. That idea that Penn State would not be among the top 25 just seems ludicrous, based on overall body of work, even with the horrible loss to Illinois.
Makes one wonder how influential the Iowa AD is on the committee.

I have never believed this. 9 in a row including winning the toughest division and conference in the country meant zero because they had to put a shittyass Washington Pac12 team in. And a team we beat along with them.

The same BS losses that year will be the same excuses this year in the polar opposite ranking- IT WAS EARLY only counts for some and only in some seasons.

This isn't just PSU either. Voters including the selection committee are stupid. They claim to witness all of this tape but most of them couldn't name 5 starters on each side of the line for every top 25 team.

If we go 9-3 we will end up 12-14.

I'm mystified why this is a debate. As mentioned earlier, we lost to Illinois, at home, on homecoming. This alone tells you why we are not ranked, it is an inexcusable loss, period.

The problem is that there are too many data points to consider when ranking 25 teams and it's humans doing the rankings. They just use whatever suits their need.

I think an expanded playoff makes it worse. I've said before, most years there are not 4 teams truly worthy of being the National Champion. The future arguments over who is ranked 8 or 9 will be epic. You need a tournament with conference champs. No more voting.

In retrospect, the old system system with two major polls got it right MOST of the time (I get the late 60's and the 94 snubs).

Im not sure that the voters care if it is homecoming or not, but no doubt, it was a bad loss.....very bad loss. I still think we deserve to be represented here, a lot of teams have bad losses, we also have 2 wins against ranked teams and clearly they are not taking into account (at all) that our QB was injured or hampered for all 3 of our losses.

Doesn’t make me wonder at all. I’m absolutely convinced Barta has his thumbprints all over decision to keep PSU out of the Top 25.

If you’re mystified, you’re not doing your homework. Yes, Illinois was a bad loss. Go look at the schedules and results of several of the other teams ranked 15 to 25. Good wins should have some neutralization of bad losses, but as it relates to PSU, they’re not looking at this (even though they say injuries are considered).

Let's face it, it really doesn't matter where we are ranked (or not) this week. IF... we can beat Michigan we crack the top 25 next week. If we lose, in all likely hood we we finish the season unranked unless we win out and then maybe we have a shot at being ranked 20th to -25th. At that point who cares.
We go to a bowl get the couple extra weeks practice and look ahead to next year.
