Interesting. That idea that Penn State would not be among the top 25 just seems ludicrous, based on overall body of work, even with the horrible loss to Illinois.
Makes one wonder how influential the Iowa AD is on the committee.

I get the optics re: Barta, but Iowa beat us. We are their best win. The committee claims to factor H2H in the case of comparable records. Barta's argument should be that we are the greatest thing since sliced bread and that means Iowa is the best two loss team. Not the worst two loss team not named Pitt.

The problem is that there are too many data points to consider when ranking 25 teams and it's humans doing the rankings. They just use whatever suits their need.

I think an expanded playoff makes it worse. I've said before, most years there are not 4 teams truly worthy of being the National Champion. The future arguments over who is ranked 8 or 9 will be epic. You need a tournament with conference champs. No more voting.

In retrospect, the old system system with two major polls got it right MOST of the time (I get the late 60's and the 94 snubs).

Expanded playoff improves the system only if it includes conf champions. Unworthy teams getting into playoffs happen in every professional sport. Its some level of qualification that no sport besides division one college football worry about. 8 win teams win divisions and host home playoff games in the NFL. The legitimacy of the NFL playoffs isnt doubted in spite of this.

Maybe you've never played a football game, but the teams I played on, homecoming was important. That's WTF I'm taking about.
The fact it was a “homecoming” loss has zero influence on the rankings. A loss to a below average team, now that’s a different story. I think that’s all the poster was trying to say, and he/she is right.

Lesson:

3 losses in September are better than 3 losses in October.

H2h becomes irrelevant when you drop 3 in a row. It's just looks bad.

Beat Michigan. Change the narrative.

If they run the table to include winning Big 10, then absolutely, they’d be ranked higher. But if they win out regular season, but lose to OSU in title game (finishing with 4 losses) & we win out, PSU will be ranked higher. Little doubt in this.
Agree. I've learned over time that the first thing the polls look at is the number of losses and it's been that way for awhile now. We should be ranked ahead of Wisky
