I am a UK fan. Have always loved the Cats. But I try to be objective. They were one of the 20 best teams in the regular season. That is a good season for a team that struggled for the last few years to even have a winning record. Whether you agree or not, most pundits have them in the top 10 this year. Kelsey has done well in HS and Portal recruiting. He may fall flat this year. But, he has done everything right up to now and is a hell of a recruiter. That is my main point. If he gets one advantage in recruiting, he is going to exploit that to his advantage.
I think they had a pretty solid turn around. Only so much you can do in one year. But, I think that top20 mark was more due to beating easy opponents. Thats how you move up in the polls and its not very metric-driven: once youre 25th, and the 4 teams ahead of lose (teams playing harder opponents), you're going to move up be default and land around 22 or 21. Thats a very big reason why UofL was able to move up. They simply didnt lose much and when other teams did, they jumped those teams. If Princeton did this, they'd have jumped as well.
Its splitting hairs, but the metrics seem to think they were closer to a top30 team. Again, not a huge difference, but that 10-rank swing signals they weren't quite as close to being any real threat to do much in March. They were four spots ahead of UNC in Kenpom, and behind St. Mary's. Thats kind of the grouping I think they belonged in. Instead of in the UK/SJU/Mizz range.
That said, still a big turnaround and I think Kelsey might be the right hire for them.
