What I'm hearing is that there WAS an actual deal, final details of which were being hammered out, when a 'leak' occured, the flames of which were fanned very quickly to become the 'blaze' most of us found ourselves following all afternoon Friday. Coach Pete is a Very private and as much as possible in the coaching profession, an honorable man and I've heard that when he was forced to make a public denial in order to quash the anger of Bronco loyalists, he decided to pull the plug on the deal.

Personally, I found his 'denial of interest' to be a well crafted public statement that would allow him to Still accept the position at a later date, shielding himself with 'plausible deniability'. While the deal might indeed be completely Dead, it could also be that there is some negotiating still underway. Obviously the most foolish thing for a person to do is to make any sort of Static statement about ANY coach, until said coach is actually at the Podium accepting the position (Anyone recall the Bobby Cremons debacle??)

As much as it pains me to say it, being the fan of an 'alleged' rival to Boise State, Coach Pete is, in my mind the best possible choice for any school presently looking. He will or would bring with him a proven 'system' with which I contend, he could make an immediate and long lasting impact, regardless of conference affiliation or competiton.

First off, what career minded coach (that's what they get into the profession for, right?) would let his feelings for their wannabe cowboy fans get in the way of an opportunity to coach in the SEC? Secondly, and this is a variation of the previous statement, what kind of coach would all the sudden, right off the bat, rule a deal out just because a leak was made somewhere? That's like saying, "So I'm Chris Petersen, I'm a competitive guy. I have a good gig here but no matter how hard I try, I can't figure my team into the national spotlight. What else can I do? We've gone undefeated. The other day, an old collegue of mine from MSU named Greg Byrne called me an wanted to sit down to discuss their head coaching vacancy. Now, I don't know alot about the place but after hearing Greg's description and eventual negotiation of the job, I said why not? It was pretty much a finished thing until someone spilled the beans and it hurt my fan's feelings. Now I'm gonna bow out and turn down a potential tripling of my salary and hang around here cause it's what my fan's want me to do." No way any coach thinks like this. If he does, he's definitely a weirdo.

For so many people with so many damn sources it must look like the Verizon wireless crowd is following Byrne around. there must be helicopters to fly around, bucket trucks to get to those pesky top floor windows so people with stethoscopes can lean against the windows , technicians to tap lines, and thousands of other people that live to be called sources to hand down information.
If he was afraid of pissing off the bronco faithful if he was in talks about the job.. what was he going to do when he accepted the job? Get the hell out of town Petrino style?
