Storming the Field

The SEC should rescind the penalty for storming the field. That’s just an underhanded way to suck money from the member schools of the conference. If a game upset is significant enough to make the crowd want to storm the field, there is absolutely no way that the school can stop it. The result is just the case of the SEC assessing a monetary penalty, which they put in their pockets and use to hire these wonderful game officials that we have.

Prove me wrong.

The money goes to the visiting school, not to the SEC. And if the school Presidents want the rule rescinded they can do so at any time.

I agree the fines do not seem to be effective. I guess the idea was the schools can just develop a culture where fans realize that storming the field is dangerous for the opposing team and staff, so they at least wait until the opponents have left the field. It's a shorterwait in basketball than in football, and fans have waited in basketball games.

I'm not sure what the schools can do other than openly remind everyone how expensive and dangerous it is. Seems like it would be even more expensive to hire a extra security for every game just in case there is a storm worthy victory.

Would a handful of arrests with heavy fines even be effective?

Storming the field after a significant win is a long-standing tradition, going back to when cable-knit sweaters and megaphones were the dress of cheerleaders, and men wore suits and women wore their finest dresses to games. If no damage is done I don't see any problem with it, as long as it's a rarity and doesn't become commonplace for a team.

On the other hand, tearing goalposts down nowadays is dangerous - they're huge 4 or 6 inch diameter aluminum tubing- and also expensive. Decades ago they were just made of wood and fragile compare to what we have now, so not all that dangerous. Regardless, why should any fine go to the opposing school? That makes no sense. Plus, how can a school be expected to prevent it?

I was sort of surprised that blue blood (or near blue blood) Tennessee fans lowered themselves to do such a thing.

So the school that loses a big game and sees the opponent’s fans storm the field gets a bag full of money as a consolation price. Cool. 🤦

I was watching the Skycam version (which was very refreshing not to hear the announcers) and the TN PA guy said something to the effect of “let’s give the visiting team five minutes to leave the field then we can celebrate together.”

I'll be the old and say the fines need to be doubled. Only the biggest of the big games should have field storming. Tn just beat Alabama two years ago.

Also Fans/people have gotten to where they can not just celebrate their win, they celebrate the other teams loss with finger salutes and mockery. It's getting out of hand. See UK last week and Texas this week. Unnecessary People don't need to be on the field.

It would be cheaper to just dig a moat around the field and put alligators in it. In the case of LSU you would have to find something they don’t eat which would be challenging.
