I think that would have been a horrible move simply because if you do fire someone, it has to be legit. Taking over someone else's pitchers who had an ERA through the roof the year before and then having all freshmen and then firing the pitching coach is not good. I think it really would have made it hard to hire another pitching coach because the candidates would be wondering why we fired our coach under the circumstances I mentioned above.
It actually might have stunted our pitchers development because they would have had to learn someone else's techniques and methods.
Now, as I said- if it's year three and those freshmen aren't progressing, then I would have said "yes, we may need to look at going in a different direction".
One interesting aside- my uncle asked me last year who our pitching coach was at MSU- and my uncle very rarely doesn't tell it like it is. So, I expected the truth and I knew he would probably give me some good insight. And after I told him "Butch Thompson" my uncle said- "Really? Wow. He's a good one." I said "Are you being serious?" and he said "Yeah- he's one of the better ones in the country". This was coming off of our two bad seasons. I then told him about our situation, and he said- "Your last pitching coach must have been a dumbass."
So there's that.
