Because of the Templeton-esque choice of Gene Chizik as Head Coach at Auburn, their program will go into the ******* for a couple of years. Any Auburn committments, particularily offensive linemen, we could snatch up?

Iowa State coach Gene Chizik has been hired as the next coach of Auburn, sources close to the situation told ESPN.com.

Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard said in a statement released Friday that his understanding is that Chizik -- the Tigers defensive coordinator from 2002-04 -- had met with Auburn officials and was a serious candidate for the job.

Chizik was unavailable for further comment Friday.

Pollard declined to comment to The Associated Press when approached at the Iowa State-Iowa basketball game on Friday night.

Under Chizik in 2004, the Tigers allowed a national-low 11.3 points per game en route to an unbeaten season.

Chizik then left for Texas. He spent two seasons as Mack Brown's assistant head coach and defensive coordinator, helping the Longhorns to the 2005 national championship.

Chizik took over at Iowa State for Dan McCarney following the 2006 season and was regarded among the nation's best young coaches when he took the job. But he's gone just 5-19 in two seasons at Iowa State -- including a 2-10 mark in 2008.

The Cyclones went winless in Big 12 play this season, and their win total has dipped in each of the past three seasons.

Last week, Chizik stripped offensive coordinator Robert McFarland and defensive coordinator Wayne Bolt of those duties and reassigned them within the staff. He also fired quarterbacks coach Tony Petersen and secondary coach Shawn Raney.

Neither of Iowa State's coordinator positions have been filled.

Information from ESPN.com's Chris Low and Mark Schlabach and The Associated Press was used in this report.

Chizik is 5-19 after two years, or as I like to look at it, one game worse than Croom or Orgeron were after two years. That, my friend, leaves a mark.

his first season he lost to Division I-AA Northern Iowa. Now, I know they were a good Division I-AA team, but imagine if Mullen lost to Jackson State. How do you lose to an in-state Division I-AA team? He also lost that year to Kent and Toledo.

I can't even fathom this hire. They would have been better served with Tommy Bowden. Even Terry Bowden. They should have called Paul Petrino.

The plainsmen aren't too thrilled with their savior. This is from The War Eagle Reader. "Think about it: He's like the Big 12 version of former University of Mississippi head coach Ed Orgeron, who didn't win a game against SEC opponents last year, also finishing conference play 0-8. Orgeron was then fired. Coach Chizik has a 2-14 record in Big 12 conference play in two years. Chizik's signiture win was over the University of Iowa in 2007. That Iowa team finished the season at 6-6." linky

Good times.

At least with Orgeron or Croom, there was some unknown when they were hired. This is like hiring Orgeron or Croom two years into their tenures.

.......had his faults, he was a relatively successful coach who was fired. OM couldn't find anyone who wanted the job, so they had to settle on Special Ed. Pretty similar to Auburn firing a successful coach in Tommy Tiberville, now having to settle on Gene Chizik......God bless me.

Looks like they updated the story....
Jacobs was on the plane with university President Jay Gogue and other athletic department officials, reportedly returning from a trip to Memphis, where Chizik's agent, Jimmy Sexton, is based. A couple of dozen fans greeted the plane and some of them heckled the Auburn officials for apparently choosing a coach with a losing record.
Nice.
