MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 4, 2019) – West Virginia University junior right-handed pitcher Kade Strowd has been named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Strowd took a no hitter into the seventh inning at No. 3 Oregon State on March 3 to lead West Virginia to a 2-0 upset victory over the defending national champions. This week’s accolade is the first Big 12 weekly honor of Strowd’s career and the first for the Mountaineers this season. Strowd is the first WVU pitcher to be named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week since 2017, when Michael Grove and BJ Myers were recognized. In 6.1 shutout innings in Corvallis, Oregon, on Sunday, Strowd allowed just one hit, which led off the seventh inning, with five strikeouts. He walked nine, but WVU turned five double plays, four of them inning-enders. Strowd held third-ranked Oregon State to a .067 batting average, second-lowest among all Big 12 pitchers last week. The Fort Worth, Texas, native improved to 1-1 on the season and boasts a 1.56 ERA with three earned runs allowed on eight hits in three starts. In 17.1 innings pitched, he has 14 strikeouts with 10 walks. Sunday’s performance helped the Mountaineers hand the Beavers their first loss of the season. The win over third-ranked OSU is tied for WVU’s highest-ranked win in program history, and West Virginia improved to 3-2 all-time against defending national champions. Strowd and the Mountaineers return home next weekend for a series against Kent State from March 8-10, at Monongalia County Ballpark. The series begins on Friday, March 8, at 3 p.m. ET, and continues on Saturday, March 9, at 2 p.m. Sunday’s first pitch is at 1 p.m. ET.
