These two neighboring rivals renewed their 50+ year association tonight on the Cougar field and the home team took advantage of a strong second half to turn back the Gladiators. It was not as overpowering a win as last year's game and this time there will be no chance for RHS to even things up in the playoffs since they will be in different divisions this year.

The visiting Big Red certainly made a game of it in the first half as they took an early 7-0 lead, and were still very much in the game at halftime, trailing only 14-13. They even had a chance to take a halftime lead on a Hail Mary that made it close to the end zone but the intended receiver could not haul it in.

But in the second half, the Cougars took firm control behind the shiftiness of quarterback Derrick Moore and the power running of Baylor Graber. Riverheads had only one scoring threat in the second half but came up inches short on a fourth down play inside the Cougar 30.

Each team had their troubles with timing issues as the flag of the day was almost always for either offsides or a false start. I don't recall a single holding call in the entire game and you know how referees love to call those!

Speaking of the refs, we would all love to know what was going on late in the second quarter.......Riverheads had the ball after a Jackson Fitzgerald interception put them in business in Cougar territory. They were trailing 14-7 at the time. They ran one play for a few yards and then there was an unexplained stoppage of play. If there was a flag it was not visible.

First the refs talked among themselves for a few minutes. Then they went over to the Cougar sideline to speak with their staff. Then they visited the Riverheads side for a confab. Finally after what seemed like a 15 minute delay, play resumed and neither team was ever penalized. We may never know what that was all about.

As mentioned, Moore and Graber were the main Cougar weapons, as they likely will be all season. For Riverheads Fitzgerald had some nice runs and even caught a couple of passes to keep drives alive. But the main Gladiator workhorse tonight was fullback Preston McCauley. He scored the first Big Red touchdown just four minutes into the game on a tough tackle-shedding run right up the gut.

After the Cougars scored twice to go up 14-7, RHS got its second TD shortly after that officiating delay when quarterback Kendal Edwards punched it across from the 1. The Gladiators missed the PAT that would have tied the score. The Cougars had 16 seconds on the clock to work with but instead fumbled around midfield and gave Riverheads the chance for the final play. Edwards got the distance he needed but failed to connect and the teams trotted to the locker rooms with SD on top 14-13.

The Cougars then scored on their first possession of the second half to go up 22-13 and added an insurance TD in the fourth. With the win, they are now 1-0 in district play and 2-1 overall after two home victories.

For Riverheads it was a rare second straight loss and they are now 1-2 on the season. They will try to take out their frustrations next Friday when Buffalo Gap comes calling. Sounds like the Bison had a similar game tonight against Wilson as they drew first blood but lost 35-18.

I also see that Staunton survived Rockbridge in a game that should not have been expected to be close, I have not seen a Fort/Waynesboro score but would assume the Indians won. In the only non-district game, Alleghany crossed the state line and knocked off Greenbrier East 36-26.

Long time reader, first time poster! I always enjoy your write ups and appreciate the time you put into them. Tough couple of losses for RHS so far, hopefully they can figure it out and get back to their winning ways. I was telling my wife last night, the biggest difference I've seen for Riverheads since Casto left is the discipline. Riverheads has always been known as a well-oiled machine, effectively only running a handful of plays over and over again, eating up clock and small yardage each time. Every once and a while breaking free for explosive gains. They've not always had the most talent or biggest kids but they were always disciplined. You knew when there was a fumble or false start/offsides penalty, the next practice was mostly going to be fixing that mistake to make sure it didn't happen again. Coach Norcross is an excellent coach and does it in his own way, and clearly has had success. I don't want to take anything away from him, I have a lot of respect for him. Another thing I've noticed is numbers. I'm pretty sure the team has always had 50-60 kids, this year, I think, only 35-40. Anyway, all that is to say, the silly mistakes hurt and I hope they can clean it up. Still a lot of season left, with a lot of quality competition to get them ready for the playoffs.

To clarify what happened in the second quarter after the interception, Riverheads lined to run their play and Draft had 12 men on the field. RHS coaches and players were all calling it out, but the refs seemed deaf to it. Riverheads ran their play for short gain, the refs finally "heard" the coaches. A single Draft player ran off the field, and no one ran back on, leaving 11 men out there for Draft. Draft coach tried saying the player came off before the play but that just wasn't the case. It was clearly after the play. I believe the hold up, though, was that the refs just missed the call and since the play had already been ran, I guess they couldn't throw the flag after the fact. They were trying to figure out how to handle it. Riverheads wanted to replay the down with a 1st and 5, and I think Draft argued since the play had already been ran, they can't backtrack.

And I believe there was a miss by the refs on the 4th down you mentioned. The had to bring out the sticks to measure. I thought it was bad spot to begin with, but from what I was hearing, when they measured, the ball moved somehow (stick hit it and moved it back, or chain, or something), but several coaches and players on Riverheads sideline tried calling it out like it was "no way you missed that!" type of error. I did not see exactly what happened to the ball, if anything, so I can only go based on the reactions I saw.

Draft played ball, though. Props to them. Gladiators didn't have any answer for Moore and seem to struggle with mobile/shifty QB's. And Graber is a beast.

To longtimersfan25 and gladfan05…

As you have always done sir, your description of the game is entertaining, informative, and excellently written. Thank you Longtimer.

Gladfan, your explanation was also excellent. Thank you for that. Welcome to the board and please, don’t be a stranger to posting.

Sorry to drop in late but this new format sucks. Now on to say congrats to Draft on a good game and excellent gameplan. I think we can all agree this has been a less than stellar start to the season for the Gladiators. As mentioned above, tons of respect for Coach Norcross and staff but something is different about the version of football being played by this group. Numbers might play a part but let's be honest, a lot of kids came out to stand on the sideline and collect a ring during the run of titles. We have 3 seniors missing for various reasons that would have likely started but that shouldn't affect us this much. Saying all that, I believe we have enough athletes and size to compete with most teams we have/will face. This is a pivotal game against Gap this week so hopefully we get tuned in and right the ship. WE still believe, RedPride4Life
