Stupid Rumor Alert

I work at East Carolina. Over the past 2 weeks, I have had 4 different people (2 students and 2 faculty) tell me that the SEC has been looking at ECU for possible expansion. There is an email apparently going around in the faculty/staff circles (I have not seen this yet) about it. One of the people said the SEC had representatives in Greenville for the ECU - Navy game last year. Not only did this rumor come from sports nuts and students, but also from someone with little to no interest in sports (he brought it up to me because he knew I went to an SEC school). <div>
</div><div> I know ECU draws 50,000 now in football and has the largest college baseball stadium in North Carolina (which they all swear is selling points to the SEC), but c'mon.I told all of them they are insane.</div><div>
</div><div>This is wishful thinking, right? There is no way the SEC would be interested in ECU or am I missing something?</div>

If there are any schools in NC that the SEC would talk to, I feel the order would be North Carolina, NC State and ECU a very distant consideration. There would have to be a handful of other schools to be considered before the SEC would consider ECU.

they seem very similar to South Carolina. Good fans, good facilities, and a state we would like to get in the TV package. They would jump at an invitation, we wouldn't have to deal with "conference killer" ********. I think the SEC would rather have Virginia Tech, but I don't think ECU is so far fetched.

One thing is certain at this point, we will NOT be taking a team in a state where the SEC is already established. So any talk about Florida State, Clemson or Louisville is complete ********.

only way it happens is if the sec has 3 teams accepting bids and about a dozen schools have turned down the 4th expansion slot.

ecu doens't have the academics for the acc. (not that f$u necessarily does either, but ecu ain't f$u) the big east makes some sense if the big east tries to get to at least 12 teams. but if the sec and big 10 go pillaging the acc and big east, leaving the acc and big east leftovers to combine, i could see ecu sneaking in the new conference.

A team that should want all of this conference realignment stuff should just end is teams like Southern Miss and UAB.

Take a look at Conference USA:

Central Florida - huge school, new stadium, would be good pickup for a pillaged ACC/Big East
East Carolina - strong sports, longshot for the SEC, but a good pickup for ACC/Big East
Memphis - basketball program alone makes them a target for the Big East
Houston - I think UH will end up in a revamped Big 12
Rice - has a shot to go with Houston
SMU - I think SMU will end up in a revamped Big 12

That's half of Conference USA. USM, UAB, Tulsa, Tulane probably end up in the Sun Belt. UTEP can find a place in the Mountain West. Marshall will go back to the MAC.

If they have the largest baseball stadium then I would hate to see what UNC and NC St have.

I live about 45 mins away (New Bern) and go to a game there every once in a while. I don't see ECU being invited to the SEC... it's just a big commuter school.

ECU could be a top candidate for a league like the Big East if they have to expand in the future.

I'd say ECU and UCF would probably be the lead candidates for any East Coast league looking to expand. I don't see the SEC looking to anyone from CUSA ever.

If the SEC expands, it'll be with teams from other BCS leagues. The SEC will be the cherry picker, and the leagues like the ACC, Big East, or Big 12 that lose out when we do our raiding will be the ones to likely look to a school like ECU.

Really? East Carolina is a leader in distance education...is that what you meant. Trust me, thousands of students have just returned to Greenville, ECU is a buzzing campus school. Oh, with a great baseball park.
