<h2 class="postTitle">RYAN LEAF RESIGNS FROM WEST TEXAS A&M, POLICE INVESTIGATE</h2> <div class="postInfo"> Posted by Michael David Smith on November 7, 2008, 4:42 p.m. EST </div>

Ryan Leaf, the Washington State star turned NFL draft bust, has resigned as the quarterbacks coach at West Texas A&M amid a police investigation into reports that he illegally obtained prescription painkillers.</p>

"Our end is done," West Texas A&M athletic director Michael McBroom said. "Without question he was a plus for our program. This has been hard on all of us. … Ryan was not brought here for media attention but to coach our quarterbacks. You can see how our quarterbacks have fared under his tutelage."</p>

An ESPN report this week said that Leaf obtained a pain pill from a football player to help him deal with wrist pain stemming from an injury he suffered in the NFL. The Canyon, Texas, police department has confirmed that it is conducting an investigation into whether Leaf obtained a controlled substance by fraudulent means.</p>

Leaf has earned praise for his coaching ability at West Texas A&M, which leads Division II in passing offense this season.</p>Leaf was also the school's golf coach, and his resignation applies to that job a

If he was having pain from a wrist injury he suffered in the NFL, he'd have no problem getting a prescription for pain medication. Doctors don't just hand that stuff out like candy, but it's not hard at all to get a prescription if you have a legitimate need for it.

and bummed one from someone else, maybe a different kind of painkiller. Or it normally doesn't hurt too much, and he hasn't had time to go to the doctor yet, or a myriad of other reasons.

All that said, he probably has a huge problem. Still, it's kind of petty to have to resign over.

But you hit the nail on the head with this.
All that said, he probably has a huge problem.
And, no, having a huge drug problem isn't anything petty to have to resign over. I'm pretty sure if I tried to get narcotics from a co-worker, I'd be fired too. And rightly so.

I'm just saying there are several legitimately possible reasons besides having a drug problem. Even if unlikely, still possible. He didn't resign saying he has a problem, it's just about this one pill. They don't seem to have any other reason to suspect he has a problem.

He probably has a problem with them. I don't know the guy, so I don't know how pills keep him away from his regular duties. But he needs all the focus he can get, and this doesn't help. The guy needs assistance, he can be successful...

You really have to wonder if maybe he was on them hard as a rookie at San Diego and it totally ruined him. That outburst with the reporter in the lockeroom reminds me of a pain pill addict that was in the situation where he did not have anymore pills and when that happens with an addict, normally they end up with a hot temper.

However, i just find it perplexing that a man can be fired over one lousy pain pill. There had to be other things that happened that added up to more than has been reported. I really hate to see a guy go from some scouts saying he was better coming out of college than Peyton Manning. Was dang sure surprised that he turned out to be a bust so early in his career. You just know the man sits up at night alot and wonders what the heck happened!

sadly, I had a family member that had a pain killer problem. its never just a "one pill" deal. the guy needs help, not ridicule, but doesn't need to be coaching at this time.

As far as I'm concerned, he should have been fired for being such a <17>ing dubmass that he tried to score the pain pill from one of the players he was supposed to be coaching.
