Listening to the Riley presser on youtube. Discusses Oline starting at about 10 min in. Contingency plans if Gates and Knevel can't go include the potential of moving Hahn to tackle and Whitaker to guard. He mentioned guys like Barnett, Decker and Gaylord (specifically said Gaylord has come on as of late). He said the young guys even though they haven't played have gotten a lot of good work in those Sunday scrimmages. Smart move by the coaches to put the Sunday stuff into the mix.

Gaylord 6'6" 3 star
Decker 6'4" 285 3 star
Barnett 6'4" 310 4 star

All in the 2015 class. I find it somewhat disappointing that at least one of these guys is not deemed worthy to step up (despite the mention of Gaylord) and there is talk of burning shirts. It seems to me it wouldn't hurt Saturday to give one or two of them a shot and see how it goes. I know a wiffed block could cause TA to get murdered and could ruin the season, but how do guys prove themselves if they can't play a little?

Don't you think that is the coaches job to get players ready and to make that call? Where is all of the talk about trusting them? Why put a guy in a situation when he is not ready and he gets blown up. I guess it is easy to sit back and say, give him a chance but there is more to it.

It's frickin Purdue. Play the young pups across the board and get them some "game" experience. Give the starters an extra week to get healed up best you can. Give Tommy the week off and play Ryker was well. He knows Purdue being it was his only substantial playing time of his career. Just noticed who the Purdue DC is - Ross Els. This should be easy pickins with him running their D.

Hope the coaches do what they need to to win the game. Doubt they'll treat it like a scrimmage.

We were listening to the Purdue game on satellite radio driving to Bloomington, so we had the Purdue radio team. Their D line is a MASH unit and guys were limping off during the game. We should be able to run at will whoever plays. All we need to do is show game tape from last year. That should fire us up.

The game call will be run heavy I would think. In his press conference, Riley said he wants more out the jet sweep and said working that play a bit better could result in good yardage. DPE and Reilly should be able to really work that play. Injuries on the D side of the ball appear to be minimal and they should be able to keep points at a minimum.

I'm disappointed as well. No one can claim that there's no opportunity this year on the OL. Looking forward, we have the 3 anointed sophomores (Farmer, Foster, Gates) plus Knevel. Cole Conrad, another sophomore, is playing. And Boe Wilson's name liberally spread through the media earlier in the season talking about burning his RS. Is one or more from that class gonna step up or are they just gonna get passed.

Yes, I know anything can happen.

Man, did you see how Wisconsin was blocking their jet sweep against OSU? Dude was getting out front and cutting his man down...it was pretty to watch.

Want to see NU just mash the ball at Purdue all day long. If they don't clear 10 pass attempts in this game, I'm good with that.

right now what separates us from Purdue is our 1st string ... the gap narrows tremendously when you start dipping into our 2nd and 3rd team.

I always thought those 4 (Gates, Farmer, Foster and Knevel) plus Decker would be our starting OL next year. But we haven't heard much about Decker lately, makes you wonder if Conrad or Wilson might get the nod at C instead. Will be interesting.

You're talking about the difference between true freshmen and redshirt freshmen on the OL. What's so surprising about some of the guys that were in the staff's first full recruiting cycle potentially being better fits for what they want to do than they guys from their hybrid 2015 class?

In the last year we have had at least five threads here about Cav's substitution policy and the bottom line in a couple of the threads was Milt agreed with it and said the only reason he subbed more guys in then was we always got so far ahead back then. And yes, I agree the coaches are way more qualified to decide who plays than I am. It just seems to me if your choices are playing a hobbled guy who could benefit from rest, burning a shirt, or giving a guy who hasn't played all year one frigging series, I might consider #3.

As for RS frosh, Riley in his presser said it didn't surprise him that they weren't in front of the more seasoned players. Hahn was known by the coaches the first man up if there was an injury. Conrad (RS Soph) gained that slot at some point early in the season and was then inserted when Knevel became a no-go. It would seem that Whitaker is now next man up. Utter, Hahn and Conrad have proven to be solid guys on the Oline right now. I like that, as it gives hope to those big fellas who might want to walk on in the future.

It's right about now that it hurts to lose that backup center. Thurston was it?

I don't get guys who wanna transfer because they're #2. Have they not seen a season of football before?

If Thurston had the goods, it would have been good to have him, as either he or Utter could have moved over to guard possibly. Probably Thurston, as Utter is a little undersized.

Thurston tore it up vs USC, for real ; or so many reported. It would have been better if he stayed; but the coaches seem to want to give worst case scenarios with the encouragement during evaluations. GBR

I bet some were saying that last year about Purdue. More than anything college football is a week to week game. We arent good enough to overlook anyone...especially a team that was just as bad last year yet dropped a half a hundred on us.

You better play every week like u have to win the game. You dont do that by sitting all ur starters down. If the guys are able to play ,you play them as much as it takes to get the win. If thats 3 quarters fine if its 4 fine. BUT if you lose to Purdue it doesnt even matter that you "SAVED" your starters for Wiscy or whoever else.

Im with Herman Edwards on this..."you play to win the game"
