I watched the first half, then the Bad Bunny halftime just to see what the hullabaloo was all about, halfway watched the 3rd quarter, then watched something else. The game just wasn't very good.
You know you bring up a good point about hullabaloo. I wonder how much against pr was just part of the pr department for bad bunny stirring the pot creating publicity and making people want to watch who otherwise wouldn't care.

It's both. Right wingers getting up in arms because someone was speaking Spanish, left wingers trying to complete their diversity bingo cards to signal their virtue. They all stir the pot because it is imperative that we all care. Meanwhile I haven't given watched a halftime show since Prince, and before that.... I honestly can't say. The year of Janet Jackson's tit, maybe?

Fact:

When the main act defiantly tells Americans they have four months to learn Spanish and later claims he will also perform in a dress as a sign of solidarity with the Alphabet Club, that act isn’t trying to be a unifying act. This goes against one of the tenets of what the NFL preaches vis-à-vis “love wins” and other third grade level mantras. Obviously, BB just needed attention or a hug from his father since he walked back his claims and decided to throw in some English phrases.

I would love to have 2 tickets to next year's Superbowl. I would sell them for top dollar and take a cruise or fly to Scotland and travel to the different regions to visit distilleries.

I stopped watching pro sports over a decade ago other than a few random minutes here and there. Last halftime show I intentionally watched was Prince and I have the ability to watch or not watch anything on TV. Politics has been injected into damn near everything because life is apparently so good in our country that people have to look for crap to be upset or offended by on a daily basis. Bad Bunny is crap music in my opinion and apparently Nikki Manij towel dried her WAP or was that Cardi B?? I like old Kid Rock but regardless...

The only tenet the NFL has is "more money." Goodell probably accomplished what he wanted in having controversy over the halftime show. Most of the time I think courting controversy is a dumb business decision, but I don't think this one was at all. They've already done what they can to antagonize people. The people that claim to care are still apparently coming back for more. The NFL needs to keep growing revenue and they have more or less saturated the US market and can't realistically have strong growth here. Yes, the population is growing, but it's still somewhat shocking they've been able to maintain even meager growth in superbowl ratings until the last few years. There is a lot more fragmentation and realistically, the only way for them to grow is to grow in international markets.

I literally didn't watch a single play of the superbowl this year. I watched enough of the halftime show to catch that there were apparently technical issues (I assume it was them and not the TVs), but I was still somewhere with several TVs tuned into the halftime show. I'd say probably 10-15% of the people were watching the game and/or commercials. I'd love to know how many superbowl parties are similar and whether that is really any different from years past. I used to actually watch the game, even after I'd stopped paying attention to pro sports. But even when I watched, there were a lot of people at whatever party I was at not paying attention, so I'm not sure if that's just me moving groups or being a general trend.

Hope those ratings were worth it, because NBC is gonna pay dearly for that smut show they allowed to air on Sunday night!**

I suspect a lot of people were "outraged" because they were told they were expected to be outraged. It was pretty much on par with prior Super Bowl halftimes. As I've said before, I like Latin music in general but I couldn't understand a word he said. I didn't get offended by it.

The Super Bowl did set a record for Spanish language viewers, which is what the NFL wants, and one reason why they booked Bad Bunny as the halftime show act. Goodell wants to grow the sport in Latin America and Europe. He's already got the US market covered. The next goal is to go international, and be like the English Premier League.

Just about every single halftime show has women dancing shaking their arse, and singers performing songs that have curse words in them, that they censor for the live performance. This one was the same, except it was in Spanish. I guarantee you some people went back and watched the show multiple times just so they could find new things to be outraged about.

I didn't watch either halftime as there was zero music that I liked involved in either. As for the game, I thought it was fantastic. I love watching good defense and the Seahawks put on a master class. I also really enjoy seeing the Patriots lose. GREAT game.
