What an amazing program they have. Their down season rebuilding years are their seasons in this position, in the mix fighting and very likely to host a regional. We're down 1-0 in the Rubber Game today, needing a win to keep hope alive for a regional host in what is probably our peak season of this little run with Renfroe and Graveman finishing up their careers.

So, you think we will start going downhill now?

Semi-downhill

I think this season was the peak of this little 3-year run. I don't expect us to be anywhere near as good next year as we are this season. But I don't think we'll be bad by any stretch. I think we'll easily make the SEC Tournament and be a sure-fire NCAA Tournament team. I just think it will be more on the level of a borderline 2/3 seed as opposed to this year's borderline 1/2. Probably another 2, maybe 3 years before we're back in the "should host a regional" type of ballclub.

But I don't think we're headed towards Polk II era

We better not be missing the SEC or NCAA Tournament anytime soon.

For 3 solid months this site was jealous of...

..the ole miss recruiting class. Nice to see the patented board jealousy has finally shifted focus & moved on to the South Carlolina baseball team.

I still say what they've developed over there is amazing. Back to back national titles, and three straight trips to the CWS Final. Like I said, their DOWN seasons are what you see right now. A 4-seed in the SEC Tournament and right in the hosting discussion. Hopefully Cohen can get us to somewhere near that level one day of hosting almost year in and year out. Although I think the 3-straight CWS Final appearances is near-flukish. Definitely some luck involved in that feat and getting a few bounces your way.

Incredible... the 2013 team is on the verge of hosting

the season isn't near over, and you have the ole "woe is me" attitude considering the 2014 team that may OR may not be any good. Give it up man. We've won the most games in the regular season since 1997 against one of the hardest schedules in the country.

Who do we lose for next season? I had this discussion with QuitBeggin on the way back from the game today. Renfroe is a big loss but if we keep Frazier for next season, we lose Pollorena, Graveman and our catchers. Next year sizes up to be pretty good.

I'm not sure what other juniors would leave (maybe Detz or Pirtle).

Bracewell and ct are possible. We need to find some power somewhere. Our pitching staff should be better. If Frazier, ct, and no unexpected losses occur, I think we could be better maybe even much better bc of our pitching staff.

Jim said today that Frazier was listed as the 142nd best prospect according to

one scouting organization (same one that had Sandberg #40). If that's the case, that could put him being drafted higher than what I would have expected. He's probably a 2nd baseman at the next level (doesn't have the strongest arm) and his BA has dropped considerably this year, so the greedy side of me wants him to hang around. Rea is also draft eligible because he had a red shirt year but I don't see him leaving.

We probably lose Renfroe, Ammo, Slauter, Porter, and Frost from a hitting and fielding standpoint. We will lose Graveman, Pollo, Girodo, and probably Evan Mitchell as pitchers.

So we should return...

Outfielders:
Bradford
Henderson
Robson
Armstrong
Fullerton

Infielders:
Detz
Frazier (hopefully)
Pirtle
Rea
Britton
Hann
Garner (catcher)
Randolph (catcher)
Flair

Pitchers:
Woodruff
Lindgren
Ross Mitchell
Holder
Bracewell (hopefully)
Gentry
Shelly
Cox
Fitts
Norris

And then we have a few guys coming in that Todd and Engie and a few others seem to think will be able to contribute immediately as freshmen. Tyler Moore's brother Reid Humphries from Northwest Rankin could potentially start at 3B next year, and Rooker, Vickerson, and Collins could all see immediate action. We also have a stud pitcher Dakota Hudson that, if he doesn't get drafted, will supposedly be in the mix from day 1.

Here's a list of incoming freshman....

This sounds alot like what LSU fans told me about how they were going to have no dropoff from to Bertman to Laval -- after all, year 1 confirmed it...

This is year one under Holbrook. What happened under Tanner is immaterial -- it's a different era now. They get no "credit" from what happened under the previous coach -- they've got to prove it under the current coach.

Several more are draft eligible and those are: Henderson, Detz, Bracewell,

Norris, Armstrong, Bradford, Frazier, Pirtle, Ross and Evan Mitchell and Renfro. Not sure how many of those will be drafted (sans Renfro) and if so, how high. Of those, I could see Bracewell, Henderson (based on speed athletic ability), Frazier and Evan Mitchell being selected somewhere.

This is true and brings up another thought...

It's an optimistic but with baseball you always have some solid contributors that you never really saw coming. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think anyone saw Detz or Pirtle being nearly as solid as they have been this year.

Baseball is a unique game so it's impossible to predict compared to football and basketball. People like Detz and Pirtle become big time players out of no where. On the flip side someone with high expectations like Woodruff completely forgets how to throw a baseball. So here's to hoping some hitters show up that no one is expecting.

Pirtle, yes. Detz, no. Detz was a decent hitter in JUCO. He started hot until everyone got a scouting report on him aid has been terrible since. I think he can be a decent SEC hitter next year, but I don't expect more than that.

Is this for real? Detz has been "terrible" since people got a scouting report? Please tell me you're joking. Detz is our most reliable on base guy right now. He leads the freaking SEC in walks. He is super valuable to this team.

He is 3rd on the team in average at .317, 3rd in doubles with 11, first in walks with 45, and sports a .455 On Base %! He is no worse than 3rd in pretty much every category behind Renfroe and Frazier. He has been far from terrible.

What is your definition of "terrible"?

He hit .264 in SEC games only. I don't see that as great, but its not "terrible."

And Detz was 5-10 with 4 walks in this weekend's series against South Carolina with a hosting site on the line. He reached base in 9 of his 14 plate appearances this weekend, yet we have people saying he's been terrible since people got a scouting report. Good gracious
