Had a close by lighting strike two days ago they took out my desktop,3 out of 5 rokus, modem, router and phone. All except the rokus were connected to surge protectors. Any thoughts on surge protectors?

Another option is a whole house system. You'd have to hire an electrician to put that in, but it's not as bad as you'd think. A buddy at work had that done at his house. If memory serves, it was around $500-600.

Surge protectors will not protect against lightning strikes. Basically nothing will. Surge protectors are a must for most hardware including computers, TV's, Stereos, game systems, etc. But they only protect against minor surges.

More in-depth information is easily found on the web or ask a professional.

I have the cheap ones from Walmart. If lightning strikes, nothing is going to prevent damage. The surge protectors just protect the electrical "surges" that could happen during storms and power outages. My cheap one from Walmart has been great and has lasted now 16 years!

Yeah... average surge protectors provide minor protection at best, and especially not against lightning strikes. You want a real good surge protector, look to spend more like hundreds to thousands, but even then, don't be surprised if a nearby lightning strike takes out gear.

Be sure everything is grounded properly and according to code, especially your Coax connections, and on real bad electrical storms unplug any devices of major importance.

My sister-in-law had a neighbors house get struck 2 days ago on the roof, house is probably gone due to the fire.

As an IT/AV professional, we use Surge-X surge suppressors.

While they probably won’t protect you from a lightening strike, they are industrial strength and will absorb a bigger spike than most other brands. If you don’t mind spending a few dollars more than other brands

I had to replace my main breaker box last year and my house wasn't adequately grounded so two additional rods were put in the ground. Something like that might be helpful in a close by hit, a direct hit might cause any setup problems. Consult a professional.

Thank you for starting this thread. I don't know anything about surge protectors but I'm just glad to see a thread about something other than politics.

Thanks to all.

You could also go full Ben Franklin during the next storm and protect your devices? [roll]

I looked around the area and several neighbors houses and saw no evidence as to where the strike hit. My next door neighbor had their water well pump knocked out.
