Taking a look at the schedule, I need the boards thoughts

Barring a major collapse against SELA, we should be 1-1 going into the Auburn game in Starkville.

Our next 3 games after SELA are Auburn (in Starkville), Georgia Tech (in Atlanta), and LSU (in Baton Rouge).

Does anyone think we have a chance at stealing one of these games. I know we can pencil LSU out of the equation. I think the Steelers would have a hard time winning down there. A win in one of those games would somewhat get them back on track to the Birmingham Bowl. Thoughts?

...and you've hit on it, is that we've got to beat either Auburn or Georgia Tech (assuming we get by SELA). If we can't, you can probably kiss 6 wins goodbye. If we could somehow manage to win the next three, we are right back in the saddle, but that is an extreme longshot. If you can get one of those, you've got 4 winnable games on the schedule - Vandy, KY, MTSU, and Ark, all at home. So Auburn and GT are huge keys. I think we have about a 30% chance against Auburn and Ga. Tech. GT looked good against Jacksonville State, but they are on the road against BC and Virginia Tech the next two weeks. We'll know more about them, then. Auburn apparently really struggled at the quarterback position, and beat Monroe like we should've beaten Tech, largely on the ground and through good defense. Like DS said, it's too bad we won't be 2-0 going into that game. The atmosphere would've been electric.

.........easily. I hate the thought of the Se La team sitting around a campground with nothing to do but bond and think about beating us.

Their talent level should be less than ours, but these are still guys that were deemed good enough to play at the low DI level. They can rise up, play a great game and upset somebody. Unfortunately for us, we come along at a perfect time for that to happen.

First of all, we will have Pegues back. That will improve the defense and more importantly ST's. It also appears as if we are going to stick with Carroll. That will help the offense out. Plus, I bet the team is going to play harder against SLU after what happened on Sat.

I bet we win. It may or may not be an impressive win, but a win nonetheless.

but unless something drastic happens, I don't see any way we upset UK and Vandy. Also, just because Nutt left hogland doesn't mean we can pencil that one in either.

I heard many fellow State fans spew that same crap about the La Tech game. With Croom as our head coach, any loss if possible.

[announced by Flick as 38,681] settles in for this powder puffer, they shall WILL MState to victory on the strength of the Greg Byrne Rope to Nowhere that we're all pulling in the same direction. OnAllFours and the Pagan will be there to scream at the top of their lungs and stare down any fan seen not supporting the bulldogs. They shall not be allowed to lose.

Good Lord. The LA Tech game was different. We have Pegues back. It's not the first game of the season. Carroll will play throughout. Dixon will run the ball more. Croom knows he screwed up against La Tech and there is no way he takes this game lightly. We will not lose this game even if we are Mississippi State, etc.

like we are back to square one. Two non-conference wins and maybe a slip up on someone for the obligatory 3 win season. Sure we could pull our heads out of our asses and win 4 or 5 but I'm not bettin' on it. I see 0-8 or 1-7 in conference.

We are at home and hopefully these knucklehead players and coaches will be fired up to actually play football. After looking at how we did against LA TECH and watching some of the other SEC teams this past weekend, I'll give my 1 cent opinion and say it seems we probably will go 5-7 (I hope to be wrong).

We will beat SELA (if we don't Croom needs to be fired on 9/8/08 and Byrne find an interim coach who gives a ****).
We should beat Vandy, MTSU, UK and Arky. (however, Vandy, UK and Arky will be tough for this coaching staff.)
Swing games - Slight chance to beat either Auburn @home or ole miss but since its in oxford, I doubt it. I had hoped we would beat both of them based on Croom's pre-season offensive hype but now with ole miss seemingly on the rise and Auburn always is tough, its highly doubtful.

5-7 or big stretch-outside-chance of 6-6 is more likely.

That being said, we could easily go 2-10 with the current coacing staff, plus if we lose Saturday 0-12 is probably certain.

So I'm a sheep for thinking there is no way we lose to SE Louisiana and that Croom knows that losing to La Tech was a mistake. I don't know what this board has come to.

You're just seeing typical college football fandom, and I've been guilty of it too. You've probably seen this video, but it really never gets old. Anyway, it's the best example I can remember of college football fan overreaction. Keep in mind this was Urban Meyer's first loss following his national championship.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJTRXaVxE1w

I gave a similar rant myself after last year's Egg Bowl. However, when I told Ed Orgeron he was f***ing fired from my living room, it was after an 0-8 football season, he deserved it, and also, I was right. Let me also add that at no point during that game did I call Ed Orgeron a genius, much less 2 minutes before telling him how fired he was.

but losing wouldn't shock me. Croom has proven that he can drag us down to anybody's level. (To be fair, he's also proven he can get us to play up a level too.)

There is absolutely no way you can say that with Croom at the helm. He is a terrible terrible coach, we could literally lose to anybody. There are no sure wins with this clown as our coach.

When has Croom ever showed you that he learns from his mistakes?? He is always talking about character, but then after La Tech he comes out and blames the entire loss on his players without even putting the smallest amount of blame on himself. Any coach who blames everyone but himself does not show character. He is a douchebag. If you haven't realized that then you are just delusional. I have not witnessed one act of good coaching from this man in the 5 years that he has been HC of MSU. His statement about us "never being embarrassed again" should go down in history as the biggest lie told to a fan base in the history of sports. I have never been more embarrassed as a State fan as I have in the past 5 years.

I agree that your next 4 games are a key stretch. You'll need to steal one from Auburn or GT to get to 2-3 heading into Vandy, and you'll have to make sure to get that one to get back to 3-3.

I really think that a lot of the reason for your success last year had to do with confidence from the early season. You got blasted by LSU, but you were able to have a rebound game against Tulane before pulling off the upset against Auburn and then winning a freebie against GW. That got you to 3-1. You really only had 1 good win (Auburn) in that mix, but I think there was a positive vibe just with carrying a 3-1 record that helped carry you to a bowl season. Basically, your team started to believe in themselves because of being able to start out with a solid record.

On the opposite end of that spectrum, if you don't pull off a win against Auburn or GT to get to 2-3, you'll be sitting at 1-4, and even though you have some very winnable games down the stretch of your schedule, a 1-4 start could be difficult to recover from mentally.

I think what you're seeing there is the old adage that a good defense gives you a chance to beat anyone, which is what happened for you last year.

Of course, on the opposite end of that spectrum, a weak offense gives anyone a chance to beat you. I know that first hand after watching us lose to a bad Wyoming team by 10 points and watching us almost blow a game against Northwestern State.

....and for good reason. But saying that his football team is undisciplined, which is what he said, is more of an indictment on his coaching staff than his players. He also apologized to the fans. So I don't know where you are getting your ******** from this week, except that we're all pissed about what happened. No reason to come up with lies and spin, though.

I completely agree that Croom shirks the blame way too much in interviews. He's said stupid stuff that's come back to bite him. He's also said stupid stuff when times are good to justify horrible things in the past (e.g. when he said we should have lost to Maine by 2 touchdowns). All I'm saying is that he knows that he should have beaten Louisiana Tech, and realizes that his failure to do so is a mistake that falls largely on him.

That is a mean spirited and unjustified attack on clowns. You wanna see a clown? Jackie was a clown. Difference is that Jackie was a clown when it was time to be a clown.

Crooms is no clown.
