The legislature has been deadlocked for days as it considers a new state flag. The argument over the 1894 flag has become as divisive as the flag itself and it’s time to end it. If they send me a bill this weekend, I will sign it.

We should not be under any illusion that a vote in the Capitol is the end of what must be done—the job before us is to bring the state together and I intend to work night and day to do it.

It will be harder than recovering from tornadoes, harder than historic floods, harder than agency corruption, or prison riots or the coming hurricane season—even harder than battling the Coronavirus.

For economic prosperity and for a better future for my kids and yours, we must find a way to come together. To heal our wounds, to forgive, to resolve that the page has been turned, to trust each other. With God’s help, we can.

No matter where you are...
I love you, Mississippi.

So what he means is he’s concerned how hard changing the flag will be for white people, while black people have had to live under the current one for 100+ years.

How many times has he expressed his concern for how hard it must be for 1/3rd of Mississippians to live under the current flag?

The comments on anything about changing the flag are horrifying. I bet Matt Wyatt got all sorts of filth.

Anyone wanting to bring an end to the flag debate knows that there is only one way to do that. Keeping the current flag is only going to increase pressure and make this worse for everyone. This will not end until we have a new flag.

No one is going to sit back and say “well, the legislature voted to keep the flag so now we’re just going to drop the issue and sing kumbaya.” There is only one end to this.

They may have the votes now but BARELY. The opposition is going to draw it out to make it as painful as possible to try and reverse it though. This isn’t over yet.

But yes, Tate is absolute chick ****. Zero guts. I still don’t even know where he actually stands on this issue. I could at least have some respect for him if he said he didn’t want to see the flag changed.

If he wanted to bring the state together, he could have lead on this issue. Tater is a puppet for the old MS regime that simply wants to make sure that "they" don't think they have any power in the state. The people who want to keep this flag want a reminder, much like the statues and memorials erected in the early 20th century, that white people are in charge and anyone who isn't a white male need not exert their opinion or attempt to gain power.

The people fighting this flag don't care about MS. They care about their place in MS.

I'm just glad this moment in history has exposed the racists and bigots for who they are so they can't hide behind "heritage" and "tradition".

Jeez, I hope that's not true. I find myself on the losing side of state and national government votes all the time, and I don't pitch such a big fit that it's harder to recover from a vote loss than from a natural disaster or global pandemic. How childish and destructive are the pro-flaggers?

Honest question. How would Tate's taking a high profile and vocal stand to replace the flag a couple of months ago have effected what is going on in the legislature now ? Would it have helped or hurt and why ?

This is why the NCAA and the SEC did what they did. It took the threat of the loss of sports for this to get done.

Oh it's the right thing to do but make no mistake, the NCAA and SEC just jumped on a high profile band wagon to "virtue signal" at an opportune time. Why didn't they address this 5,10,15 years ago. It certainly does not change my opinion about either organization.

I think if the governor would take a firm stance in favor of removing the current flag and help house and senate leaders whip votes, this thing would already be over. We need a strong leader, and he is not that. Tate wants to ride the fence, hide behind a referendum, and try to make sure he gets re-elected.

"the governor" yes but not just any governor. We've had some strong governors in the past that could pull this off but I don't think Tater would be effective and it would have possibly blown up in his face. He is not and never was gonna be a "strong" governor. Just My opinion.

I've heard some stupid **** from politicians before, but this may be just about the stupidest. If anything, NOT changing the current flag would come closer to being this difficult to "recover" from.

Have you not read any quotes from the governor of Mississippi in the last 8 & 1/2 years? The top 25 would be comedy gold.

Reading between the lines of his post, it's like he's about to lose his best friend. This guy is a real dud as a governor.

My rep posted on FB last night that after a difficult decision he was voting to change it and he is getting lambasted by ppl I’ve known my whole life and have never heard say an ill word about anyone. I just don’t understand the people that can’t see that the cons drastically outweigh the pros of keeping the flag.

I think there are a lot of people that believe this is not just about the flag anymore. That's at least what I hear from people who are for changing it and against changing it. That seems to be a common fear. I can see it in things like the Mike Leach tweet that was not racist nor insensitive.

It's something that is going to have to be worked through as a state.

And you don't know where he stands?

A republican Governor and republican legislature will get the flag changed. Unlike the democratic governor we had In 2001...... and y'all call him and others, chicken **** and bigots.

No one needs to forget Tate could have called a special session, and only a simple majority would be needed to pass it.

Yeah, he said he will sign the bill because a veto would be pointless. If the bill gets to his desk, it would already have the 2/3 majority to override a veto. That’s not him taking a side.

Again, where does Tate stand on this issue? He has not come out in support of the current flag or against the current flag. He is riding the fence and trying to hide behind a referendum. Tate is playing the role of Pontius Pilate in an effort to keep his hands clean.

And FWIW, I am not a democrat but this is a much different issue than it was two decades ago. Comparing now and then is asinine. Say what you will, but virtually every democrat holding office in this state is in favor of replacing the flag.

Not necessarily. He could fall on the sword for the flag supporters by convincing them to present the bill and he would veto it to save the legislators from being held responsible. Then he could get re-elected by the 59.000001% to 48.999999 % margin. And he could be a lame duck for 4 more years.******

This is what I hear a lot. And there is merit to it.

Where does the “social justice” end?
Does it end when civil war era stuff is gone? No, we’ve already seen that.
Does it end when “systemic racism” is gone? No Bc what does Francis scot key or Ulysses s grant Have to do with systemic racism?

I’ve said it a thousand times and I’ll say it again. BLM isn’t abt saving black lives.
Large amounts of Democrats and liberals Don’t care abt black lives. They care abt votes.

I can give countless examples if anyone would like.
