I feel the intangibles and the will to fight hard for your coaches and their direction is the determining factor to success... I know I'm stating the obvious, but a lot of teams this year are missing that connection. Just look at games in week 6. We'll see where their heart is next week (as a whole) vs IU. It should tell us a lot about the remainder of the season. Not saying IU is elite, but how they perform will say a lot about mIndset going into WI and OSU. Also, don't wanna dismiss Purdue in the discussion. We all watched IL last week. My first post on this board and probably a bland one but I wanted to chime in as a huge fan of the team we all love and wanting to see us get back to the good ole days!!

Agree, but if you're a blue blood, which we still clearly are, that's another excuse that needs to be thrown out the window. Not trying to be hard on them or the staff but it's time to get the depth that the other top programs have or we'll be making these excuses for another 15 years. Again, love this team. Unfortunstely, my standards are just stupid high. TO spoiled a lot of us in the hay days and we just can't get around it. I'm not unrealistic but want to see a serious return to prominence at some point. Hopefully, we're tracking in the right direction now... Finally. We'll see.

Well by your standard, it took T O decades to meet your standards. Or maybe you were not yet following; and he was just lucky. If your not being hard on them; why do you bring it up in this way of excuses, where in truth they have had very little time and are doing outstanding in recruiting - while branching out in every direction - we are tracking just fine. The competition across the board is also improving and contracts spread the money around. GBR

You lost me. In the first post the emphasis was on heart and the second on depth. The willingness to go to the wall can only go so far. Gotta have the horses to run the race well and as you point out in your second post, a lot of them for depth. There is always a certain amount of the intangible that is key to the success of any team. The old TO teams had it. Do we have it now? I dont know.

Well said, we are tracking well. Not trying to be confrontational. TO was likely given more time to succeed than what is normal in today's world of CFB. I am only trying to build our program up to what I feel they are capable of getting back to without all of the media saying it can't be done because of the new landscape of recruiting, etc. Nebraska is still seen as a major program. Other top teams have had their ups and downs, e.g., TX, ND, USC, and most of the recent B1G elite until of late. The B1G wasn't that great 5 years ago. Regardless of what they say. I'm simply saying that I want us to walk the walk and not play into the bad media that only wants to latch on to the status quo. We've been there once not that long ago and I believe we're on our way back. Regardless of the media. I just hope fans don't forget what we were... and have s lot of hope going forward. Don't settle for average. Hold everyone accountable. Let's get back to Nebraska football!!

People have already forgotten that basically our right side of our line is a 2nd and 3rd teamer at guard and tackle. Dr. Tom himself would have been hard pressed to make that work against good competition. We're a year away I'm afraid on our offensive line and our defensive line has one guy on it that would have started most years for Tom. IF Riley keeps winning with the holes he was left in the depth chart when Bo departed, he deserves to be B1G coach of the year. I was pretty optimistic about our DEs before the season started but Freedom hasn't shown up like I thought he would. With Stoltenberg still hobbled this next game could be tough.

If you're willing to run through the wall for your coach you can go pretty far... especially if you have talent.

You have to interject the "ifs" to make the case. Can you say with certainty that we have both? I could not. Talent without will and technique only go so far of course. My point is you are not going to overcome lack of talent on a consistent basis. There is always the exception but not the norm. It goes back to the question "is there such a thing as an overachiever?" To which I say no. You cannot achieve beyond your given ability.

That's where you are wrong. You can rise to the occasion and do great things. Another aspect of this debate is the great coaching by Riley and the staff. They are putting the team in a really good position to succeed. That dynamic can't be understated.

Dr. Tom used to build depth by collaborating with his assistant coaches, to place boot in rear of anyone lollygagging during the game, which helped get the second string on the field, which built depth.

but then he didn't have communist scholarship limits, title x, and had a jv team.

I reckon Mr. Riley is doing what he can.

Rising to the occasion involves both sides - one team playing to its abilities and the other slighly less than. You contend there is no ceiling by saying they can rise to the occasion -nice words but totally meaningless. I will state again -can you play above your talent ability?

Freedom is responsible for most of the sacks our DL has received.....they usually run from his pressure right into the Dzurik or other DL....Sack numbers don't tell the tell with him.

yes, chemistry and effort overcome a great deal...examples each and every year across the cfb landscape.

So did you ever want to dunk a basketball? Did you? How about run a sub 10 second 100 yard dash? What do you tell Shaquille O'Neil when he says he wants to be a jockey. All the want to in the world doesn't get it done in those cases and a lot more. To bring up "the jump" in thin air is pretty weak.

If it was the thin air why didn't anybody else repeat that one jump that day??? It was like God himself came and picked up Bob for that one jump.
