Mine is the Cardinals baseball team. Grew up hearing my grand dad talk about listening to them on the radio and all but I have just never liked them for whatever reason.

and it worked fine until I was a student at MSU in 1991 and they joined the SEC. I even had a hog helmet as a kid due to many family members that graduated from there. They were not difficult to abandon.

I rooted for both until they beat the Broncos in the Stupor Bowl. Hated them afterwards until the Broncos finally reached the Promised Land.

Intergects itself into you via life circumstances....if you try to force it outside the norm, it won't stick...I was born a Bullie by birth...love instilled by my Dad....listened on the radio starting in the late 60's..never missed a game...startedu going to jxn met games and saw the same coach and players get promoted to Flushing and was lucky enough to land game 7 ticks in )'86 lto see the Ny Mets win it all in person....grew up liking the Boys as many other kids did in the South...grew attached to the Saints....enjoyed the Mavs while here in ft worth and hope the Strangers take it this year....but outside true life experiences and geographics, I don't see how anybody can just automatically turn that allegiance motor on.mo

Did we have to be Oiler fans to be big fans? I live in Nashville. Just curious given your example how people viewed sports fnas whose team is newer.

I kid I kid. Honestly, I'm with you. I actually understand the idea of "trying" to like a team, but it's impossible for me. I would compare it to physical attraction or love, you don't really have control over creating such things.

i've always been a saints fan first, but was a titans/oilers fan also when steve was the qb. he was always my favorite players when he played. still tried to pull for the titans after he left but vince young ruined that for me. why couldn't the texans have drafted him or bush and left williams for the saints?

like them... casually pulled for them based primarily on that ancestrial connection alone.. but then IT happened... 1 million "imbezzled" dollars caught going to players funneled by a "rogue" admin asst at a chicago company... since she was not an "official" alum, the NCAA and their love for that TV contract turned a blind eye and hardly ANYTHING was done to them...

I know there are many other programs that can get away with stuff that MY team couldn't even sniff without 5 years of probation, but that hypocricy by the NCAA was so damned blatant, it made me vomit and now I pull hard for ND to lose every game...

the "embezzler" by the way made 2 ND players proud daddys.....

I've always wanted to like Auburn. They're the Mississippi State of Alabama. My brother-in-law went there and is a huge fan, and he's turned my sister and their kids into huge fans. I've been to 4 games there and the campus is nice and the people have always been great. They hate Alabama. But their coaches have always been giant douchebags, from Pat Dye to Tommy Tubberville to Gene Chizek. I've just never been able to honestly pull for them to win. After the Cam Newton fiasco, I've quit even trying to pretend.

They were kind of fun to follow over the past 5 decades, during much of the time that MSU was sucky-poo.

And, they have a catchy name.

But, they pretty much suck, also.
And don't really giveashat.

As for Ole Miss, I actually used to root for them until I was a freshman at Millsaps (I was never a full-bore, drunken, self-absorbed, so-uptight-if-I-shoved-a-lump-of-coal-up-my-***-in-three-weeks-I'd-have-a-diamond, ogle-pics-of-shirtless-teenaged-boys-working-out-over-the-summer?Hotty-totty Rebel fan, but you get my drift). ?Then, it was this game that permanently changed my mind about Ole Miss:

Get into it. I'm always surprised to find when I wake up on Sunday that they're playing a home game about 4 miles from my house

It really is a different level. I lived here when they were still the Oilers and playing at Vandy. Got to watch the name and uniforms decided then see Tennessee's new team go all the way to the Super Bowl as the Titans. I got swept up in it. Have been a huge fan ever since. The city really loves them.

To the earlier poster, Vince was Bud Adams boy. The town has been and still is divided on Young.

We aren't too shabby so far this year. They are keeping me sane after what the Dogs have delivered so far.

I could never "pull" for another university other than State, but I work for VT so I've tried to at least follow their program. I've been to a few games but I just absolutely cannot get interested in them at all. In fact, the arrogance and outrageous expectations of the VT fanbase (along with a variety of other reasons) has really soured me on them.

Its almost a relief when they finally lose a game or two each year just so its shuts up all of the National Championship talk that inevitably gets cranked up around here every August. As for the SEC, I've had co-workers assure me that VT would be in the top 1/4 of the SEC should they get an invite. And of course, when I tell them they would likely be more of a middle-of-the-pack type team, then I'm "just a hater because MSU isn't on the same level as VT is."

My tipping point was when a co-worker called me out in a staff meeting for wearing an MSU tie on a Friday last fall and then launched into a rant about how "disrespectful" it is to wear something like that when you work for VT. I thought the bastard was just joking at first, but turns out he was as serious as a heart attack. As much fun as the Gator Bowl was last year, I would have loved to have matched up with VT in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl last year because I think we would have busted their overrated asses.

Wife's family is full of Auburn fans. But my father in law is one of the worst Auburn sheep I've ever met. If something goes wrong at Auburn, it's a Bama conspiracy (including the Eric Ramsey saga), and if something goes right, it's because God loves Auburn and they're just great simply because they are Auburn. The Cam saga sealed the deal for me. They can lose all their games and get the Death Penalty for all I care.

I am a grad student here, and I thought when I enrolled here I might try to root for them (along with MState) but I have just never been able to care. In fact, in 5+ years here I have only gone to one game, and that was to watch us play them. (This was the Crooms "punt from the 30" game).

Also, the Falcons are the local team here, and we had Griffith and Norwood playing for them, so I thought maybe I should follow the Falcons, but again I just can't give a ****. I am not a Saints fan (don't give a **** about them either), so it wouldn't be heresy for me to pull for the Falcons, but I just can't bring myself to care.

Been here 20+ years. Hate 'em both.

UGA fans are deluded, living-in-the-past,mamma's-boys. (Sound familiar?).
Falcon fans are trash. (Godfrey excepted).

Didn't grow up following any particular NFL team, or really watching NFL at all. Became a SF Giants fan in the late '80s thanks to Clark and Brantley, tried to pull for the 49ers just due to the same-city thing and Montana, but honestly never could really bring myself to care.

I pretty much just wait for the Super Bowl and pick the side that has a Bulldog in it and pull for them. I almost never voluntarily watch the NFL. Except for Hard Knocks on HBO. I can't put that down. Love it.

I was just a lad of about 10. 'Archie-Who' was in his prime and my best friend was a reb fan. State was mired in their 60s slump and my older brother who liked State had not gotten through to me yet. My reb phase lasted maybe one season and it just never felt right. Things my bro was telling me soon clicked and in short order I was glued to the radio listening to Cristil and never once even thought about looking back.

In the pros I grew up a saints fan (again partially due to archie) but when I moved away from the area my interest waned a bit because they were never on TV or in the media outlets where I lived. Eventually moved to the ATL area and developed a mild interest in the Falcons although I never lost interest in the saints. That was soon abandoned when the saints started to pick up the pace.
