Teams I have seen and educated guesses

Amherst County Lancers
physical hard ground game but sometimes they kill themselves. Quarterback is better runner than thrower which is not a knock. They need to work on pass defense. If they get better at limiting mistakes and playing better defense, they could be a player.

Salem Spartans
They played three very good teams and are 1-2. Fumbles are a killer in football and if Salem is to have a chance in state play they have to limit mistakes and find out who they are. I do not think Blacksburg is 37 points better on most days than Salem but Salem looked expected to win and Blacksburg came in to win.

William Byrd Terriers
5-0 and 6-0 after this week. If they were scoring 70 a game people would be going crazy but that is not their game. I would say the jury is out on them but a little food for thought. Staunton River scored 52,42,55,47,41,59,47,50,75,87,68,55,62,20 and 6. The 20 and 6 were Blacksburg and Byrd. I am not saying they are as good but beat same teams similarly last year and only lost to Salem.

Dinwiddie Generals
Very good on offense and they spread you out . They have great backs and a great defense. They are a little different in that they have a quarterback that can throw but has a little less experience so his percentages are down but he adds an extra dimension as a runner. I would compare him to Kelley Bryant type right now and expect him to get better. Also, very good at special teams as is Salem and Blacksburg.

Blacksburg Bruins
Cole Beck is one of the best in state. He probably is fastest and can play your best pass receiver on defense . He is not just a runner but has good hands and can jump. That being said they are quick and their lineman are quick too.

Summary
I would add in Monacan but know nothing about them except they are good and play in a tough area. All of these teams are capable of beating each other so it comes down to execution and limiting mistakes.

I agree about Amherst, struggles with pass defense but they did intercept the Bees QB last week 3 times

I doubt William Byrd can beat a lot of those teams but they are undefeated so they garner a certain respect until proven otherwise. One team that you didn't mention that I would like to know more about is Glass. What is the concensus from my western posters on this team. I probably won't see them unless they make the state championship in all likelihood.

You realize if LCA, JF, heck Huguenot...Probably all of the average teams in 4a had played Byrd's schedule then they would definitely be 5-0 too. They've beat no one. Pulaski's resume is more impressive and they loss to Northside.

JF scrimmaged Byrd in the beginning of the season and I expected a lot more from Byrd. JF played pretty badly and still beat them. Not impressed at all...

Byrd played terribly in that scrimmage. That’s by far the worst they have played all year outside of the 1st half of the Richlands game.

Great defense. Charlottesville scored 46,40, and 57 in their 3 wins, and EC Glass held them to 14 in regulation. Offense needs a bit of work. Can't get much better coaching with Woody. I would be surprised if they went undefeated with that Seminole slate, but look out for them come playoff time.

Yeah not impressive. Amherst probably had one of the toughest Salem, GW, Blacksburg, does it prepare them for the rest of the season, probably, will it help them in points, should. Amherst has a good team this year, better than most expected.
I think so too. It also helps that y'all play in the Seminole!

EC Glass has playmakers and homerun hitters on offense with a first year QB. Like their play on perimeter and special teams. Strong at LB and secoondary. A good team will need balance to beat them and solid pass rush to make them one dimensional. They could be #1 or #2 seed in regional. They finish with Amherst.

That Amherst game will be a good measuring stick for Glass. I think both those teams are pretty solid. If they both keep improving they could be in the consideration set to rep the west in the championship. At this moment I would say Blacksburg is the favorite.

The tough schedule will definitely help them if they make the playoffs. They're definitely good enough to make the playoffs and win some game once they get there but, they could easily miss out because of their tough schedule. They already have two losses in the region and with Heritage, LCA, and Glass still remaining, they could end up anywhere from 8-2 or 5-5. It's going to be tough for a 4-5 loss team to make the region D playoffs should that happen. Charlottesville, Byrd and GW are all but guaranteed at least 8 wins with their schedules then you factor in Salem, and Blacksburg who probably doesn't lose another game and you have at least 5 of the 8 teams with 8 plus wins.

The same could be said of LCA, Glass, or Amherst honestly. They all still have to play one another so something has to give. The advantage that Glass has is that they already played and beat a really good Heritage team. Amherst and LCA still have to play each other plus Glass and Heritage.

That final game should be packed
