BOOM! Teamsters Respond to TPP Withdrawal – PRAISE TRUMP!

Jim Hoft Jan 23rd, 2017 2:21 pm 13 Comments

Teamsters General President James P. Hoffa released a statement today praising President Trump and his withdrawal of the Trans Pacific Trade Agreement.

Hoffa released a statement this afternoon praising President Trump for defending American workers.

The following is a statement from Teamsters General President James P. Hoffa on President Donald Trump signing an executive order to formally withdraw the United States from the Trans Pacific Partnership.

“Today, President Trump made good on his campaign promise to withdraw the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership. With this decision, the president has taken the first step toward fixing 30 years of bad trade policies that have cost working Americans millions of good-paying jobs.

“The Teamsters Union has been on the frontline of the fight to stop destructive trade deals like the TPP, China PNTR, CAFTA and NAFTA for decades. Millions of working men and women saw their jobs leave the country as free trade policies undermined our manufacturing industry. We hope that President Trump’s meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto on Jan. 31 opens a real dialogue about fixing the flawed NAFTA.

“We take this development as a positive sign that President Trump will continue to fulfill his campaign promises in regard to trade policy reform and instruct the USTR to negotiate future agreements that protect American workers and industry.”

I thought we were anti unions?

That is what separates Trump from most conservatives. Trump actually had good relationships with unions on his construction jobs. He knows many of the trade leaders.

This issue does scare Dems. Unions have been a core constituency. Many of them in rust belt states abandoned the Dems. Issues like this will increase the exodus. As I mentioned, a realignment is occurring and both liberal and conservative elites don't like it.

I don't mean Trump - I mean we conservatives. Are you not still anti-union? I am.

The Republican reactions will be interesting. They have been anti-union and pro-free trade for my lifetime. This approach is 180 degrees opposite to one of their fundamental beliefs.

I am totally against it. Then again I recently found out I'm liberal.

Personally, I oppose public service employee unions, not private sector unions. In a negotiation, you have to have two sides with differing agendas. They hopefully reach a compromise. With public unions, a party can simply give the union what they want, the taxpayer funds it and the political party gets the votes as support. That is wrong as FDR pointed out nearly 90 years ago.

I think you're exactly right. This is one of the reasons there were so many NEVERTRUMPers as part of the GOP elite. That is why I said, a realignment is coming. It started with the rust belt states and will get bigger if Trump is successful. If he's not, all bets are off.
