Because he had run his
course in Manhattan, KS.
His bit gets tired and old after a few years. The players hated his guts there.

It was a problem for KSU fans that KU fans really liked having Martin around. His actions on the court were considered an embarrassment and the KU fans continually reminded them of this. I like that he is a crazy person on the court but that type of style only works if you win a lot more than you lose. He did this pretty well at K State but just not enough. Plus, as stated, he didn't get along well with others including the AD.
^^^This.. There was a tell all article written by SI, I believe, and honestly felt like the AD was in the right.
It was a "bad fit," as I recall reading from both sides of the dispute. Also, look at the upside of a job like South Carolina - minimal expectations, a nearly brand new facility, SEC TV exposure and a healthy salary.

I guess when your used to the Tad Pad, a twelve year old arena may seem "nearly brand new." I do agree with you though. The job has potential. Atlanta is an easy trip. Columbia is closer to Charlotte than the Raleigh area is. Charlotte has some good talent.
I made absolutely no pont to watch KSU on tv.....
