Sounds a bit like the NW coach trying to avoid the shutout. Luckily nobody was hurt at the end of that game. They are down by two touchdowns with less than 10 seconds to play. Coach calls a timeout, play is run and his player gets hit hard. Players start to go at each other. What was he thinking?
My mistake. It was Florida's quarterback who was the victim of the hard hit (which might result in a suspension). In any event, down two scores, Florida has the ball. What did he hope he would accomplish? They are down by two touchdowns with less than 10 seconds to play. Coach calls a timeout, play is run and his player gets hit hard. You get x games and y practices every year and no more. A smart coach uses every down as an opportunity to develop players and introduce them to complex situations. It doesn't make any difference if you 'can't win the game' You simply can't recreate in practice the kind of experience a gametime opportunity on national TV vs. a major opponent gives your players. They are down by two touchdowns with less than 10 seconds to play. Run a few seconds off the clock before taking a knee so there's at most one play left.My mistake. It was Florida's quarterback who was the victim of the hard hit (which might result in a suspension). In any event, down two scores, Florida has the ball. What did he hope he would accomplish?
Hit on QB overblown a little although he was in a vulnerable position. If the QB takes a knee immediately there’s still 8 seconds left and Tennessee ball. That could lead to a 7 second TD pass and a strange kickoff resulting in a TN TD still theoretically possible. A fumbled-into-the-end-zone kick return recovered by TN would complete the miracle finish.
