Tennessee job must really be a mess to clean up

Lots of people evidently not interested, and it is a position you'd think would have good people lined up around the block to interview.

Apparently Kirby declined to even interview. I mean, who the hell is going to be their coach next year?

Wouldn't be surprised if they pulled off a bigger than expected name. Al Golden is who they SHOULD go after.

They have a **** defense, Bray, Hunter and Petterson will leave early for the draft most likely and this years recruiting class looks bad. The fans are pissed and want wins right now and the University is cheap and doesn't want to pay top dollar. Looks like the hole will continue to get deeper. It's a mess and has been for 5 years now. Read this article from September. It's only gotten much worse since this was written.

Maybe Kirby knows something we don't. Like, the Bama job is his when Saban makes another play for the NFL?

Al Golden apparently turned them down according to the same source that said Smart wouldn't interview.

Things have got to be pretty bad if a guy has the opportunity to get out of Miami and doesn't.

I think that's close, I think Kirby is coach in waiting. Saban probably retires in 2-4 years.

Seriously doubt Smart was event approached by UT. AD Dave Hart said the day after Dooley was canned that it was "critically important" the new hire have HC experience.

$100,000,000 athletic budget, top 10 athletic facilities, 102,000 seat stadium, tradition out the ***. I don`t know how big of a "mess" they have but there are a bunch of schools that would trade their situation for Tennessee`s "mess". They`ll be back.

I agree. some UT guy on the radio made it out like their program was in shambles, but how bad could it really be....cue those things you mentioned.

Hell they may get desperate and take Petrino. wouldn't that be a hoot.

Apparently UT is cash strapped....

As we all know, they're paying a whole lot of buyout money to multiple coaches in multiple sports, include Dooley & Fulmer. A buddy told me a couple of weeks ago the UT athletic department said they wouldn't be making their annual donation to the UT Foundation or something like that. It's been a while and I don't remember exactly what the donation was for, but the gist was it was a big deal they won't be making it. They're still a top job, but if they want a quality coach, they're going to have to pony up. The damn Bammers changed everything by giving Saban $4M a year.

I would almost say because they have no talent in Tennessee, but schools all around the country in much worse places stock their roster full of players and end up much better off.

when they were at their best, I remember them owning tennessee, cherry picking alabama and mississippi, and a big presence in north carolina, virginia, california and florida. don't see them getting back to that anytime soon. too many other options for players.

Saban's not going anywhere for a long time. He knows he's got a real chance to match or even break Bear Bryant's record 6 national championships. And the best place for him to do that is where he is right now. Hell, if he beats Notre Dame, that will give him 3 titles in 4 years. Bear never won 3 titles in less than 5 years.

When you look at Saban's history, it's pretty clear he gets bored with a job after aboout 4-5 years. This is year 6 for him at Bama. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him bolt to the next project soon. And Texas is one of the very few schools with the name and cash to lure him away from Bama. Plus, he'll have an easier road to the title in the Big 12. Say what you will, but Bama backed into the BCSCG the last 2 seasons.

I can't confirm whether it's true or not, but I've been told the university has been cutting purely academic scholarships so they can funnel more money towards the new coach's salary.
