Interesting post sky. I'm curious though, what kind of arrogance did you encounter? Growing up it was always the Duke fans who thought they were untouchable.

You're prob close to my age then.. you shoulda grew up in the mountains if you don't think Carolina fans are arrogant lol that's all I've ever known with few Duke fans.. but the funny thing is the duke fans are catching up with the younger generation from what I see now

I'm from Alamance County aka tar heel county and to this day there are more unc fans than Duke,NCSU, W.F., ECU and Appy St. fans put together but most of those are ABC fans. OFC

Given your age, things were probably different in those days. When I was growing up, Duke was the powerhouse and Carolina was fading into irrelevance. All I heard was how great k was and how Duke was the ivy league of the south. It was a nightmare. I grew up in Charlotte by the way.

I live in Charlotte. No way a person can live here and NOT be inundated by unx fans. This is their second home. Can't throw a rock without hittin' one. All due respect but , clearly , ya didn't get out much.

Ok. Now I got it. THIS^^^ is what happens to unx fans when all they do is get their info from each other. They do this because , to them , THEY are the center of the basketball universe. Arrogance? Ever heard of the "carolina way?" Sure , it's a punchline now but for years rival fans ( especially in NC ) had that shoved in their faces. To this day , if ya talk to any unx'er who recalls Dean Smith , they speak of 'im as if he was a cross between Gandhi , Mother Teresa and Santa Claus. He , to them , is the patron saint of all things basketball. He was a ball coach. That's it. He was a good one but that's all he was. It's embarrassing to watch grown-azz men have their eyes water as they reminisce about the days of El Deano and unx basketball. We don't need to get into it but he's up to his teeth in the present-day issues. That said , unx and their fans actively pushed that "carolina way" mantra. "We just flat-out do it better than everyone else. Don't like it? Haters yada yada yada." Sure , some Duke fans are a little too full of themselves ( especially these days but that's another topic for another time ) but no one touches the tarhole nation. Heck , I WILL bring up the current mess. Just look at how unx has tried to defend themselves. No self-sanctions , no admission of any significant wrong-doing , nuthin.' Instead , they've spent millions on PR , legal fees and a half-azzed "documentarian" ( BWAHAHAHA! ) to sell the public on the notion that they are an honorable institution unfairly maligned. This is all happening as we speak yet unx fans don't notice the arrogance...among other things????? Ok sure. Whatever. Those darn Dukies. Hifalutin the bunch of 'em dadgummitt.

I know it's easy for you to see as the bad guy, but even you have to admit that 'good and evil' in this scenario depends on who a person roots for.

Make all the posts you want about our scandal and just how unethical we've been. But I still love my Heels. That's not changing. Just like you root for Duke and that's not changing.

I live in Avery County there are tons of UNC fans that are also NCSU fans. If that sounds like an oxymoron it is because of two words Tommy Burleson. He is a local hero here and UNC fans here like NCSU as well because of him.

As a Duke fan I am a lone wolf. Great to have a guy like Tommy to talk ball with though.

Bingo. I tried to be cordial about it but DevilDj hit it on the head. Part of the problem post Coach K is that he had the nerve to come and win 5 national championships, started getting better players, sending more elite players to the NBA and kicking unc rear end consistently. That just eats away at the unc core and is why they hate Coach K to the point of calling him Satan and Hitler by some. Their fans or thr's perception of us as to the words they use to describe who we here at DI are is due to Duke's success in the Coach K years. If it had been NCSU or Wake Forest that Coach K had been hired at in 1981 and he brought those schools success then they would be the carolina way's foe. That's part of the arrogance and entitlement. No one should have had the nerve to trample all over the success unc had enjoyed. OFC

To me, probably the most arrogant thing they do is hang that silly Helms banner up there beside their NCAA banners just like it holds the same merit...give me a break! And it is done only to make them look better than Duke. That thing is an absolute joke! But in reality UNCheat is in the same boat as Lance Armstrong to me now. Most all of their wins and championships are the result of fraud and when you consider that then the Helms banner is probably the most legit one they have.

I can't speak for another's experience but make no mistake. Charlotte is , and always will be , tarhole central. What I CAN speak to is having more age and experience with it. Duke has made in-roads in the last few years , popularity-wise , but neither they ( nor State nor Wake etc ) will overtake unx. Duke could win 10 straight titles and it wouldn't matter. "Ya'll still ain't gonna beat Roy next year!" And if ya consider Duke fans arrogant , well , some are. If ya consider Duke fans arrogant while being oblivious to the holier-than-thou , our-stuff-don't-stink attitude from the tarhole nation deeply-entrenched here in the Queen City , well , you're either blind , willfully-obtuse or both. This is not close. Sure , I'm speaking anecdotally but it is what it is. Here's a test...

1) Step back

2) Take a deep breath

3) Take a few moments and consider the millions , MILLIONS , of dollars unx has spent to cover up the worst collegiate scandal in NCAA history. Even the most objective viewer would have to be sickened. An honorable ( not arrogant ) institution woulda taken their medicine YEARS ago. If nuthin' else , the fans woulda screamed for it. Instead , the opposite happened. unx does whatever possible to avoid sanctions with 100% support of their fans.

4) Add all this in with the PR "carolina way " nonsense and there's only a single conclusion to come to...and it AIN'T "Duke is arrogant , unx are the good guys." unx ain't the good guys. Never have been and never will be.Heck , they've never even TRIED to be. They tried to create the illusion of being so. To their credit , it kinda worked for a pretty good while. Not no mo' though.

Bingo, the 57 was crooked, the 93 probably, the 2005 definitely crooked and was just like the 2009, crooked as a snake.

Let them have an honestly earned Helms Trophy as it was pretty close to an intramural or YMCA championship.

Isn't It refreshing reading carolinablue34 post, he's certainly not afraid to hide his opinion from the UNC Masses. Also, blue34, where I live in Cumberland County I am one of probably around 200 Duke fans compared to around 250,000 screaming arrogant tarhole fans. Its hard to find Duke gear, even a hat but every department store all the way to 7-11's and Osama's Gas and Go has a full array of UNC stuff.
