Tennis Concludes Big 12 Championship
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 23, 2015) – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team concluded its 2015 campaign with a 4-0 loss to No. 41 Oklahoma in the first round of the Big 12 Women’s Tennis Championship at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas, Thursday morning.
“We played Oklahoma on Saturday (April 18) and knew what to expect. We learned from some matches and had players that competed well,” said second-year coach Miha Lisac. “Oklahoma competed well and took the second win of the season home.”
The Mountaineers (9-13, 0-9) fell behind 1-0 after the team dropped the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches. The contest between the duo of junior Hailey Barrett and senior Ikttesh Chahal and the Sooners’ Emma Devine and Malene Stripp was abandoned at 4-4, once the team-point was clinched at the conclusion of the No. 2 doubles match.
In singles, WVU’s deficit grew after sophomore Kaja Mrgole stumbled against OU’s Lily Miyazaki in straight sets on court one with a score of 6-1, 6-2. At the No. 5 slot, freshman Carolina Lewis fell to OU’s Stripp in straight sets (6-4, 6-0).
The match-clinching point came at the No. 3 position, where Chahal fell to OU’s Abbi Melrose with a score of 6-2, 6-4. Chahal dropped the first set 6-2, but jumped out to an early lead in the second set. She was unable to continue the early momentum and dropped the second set 6-4.
Chahal finished her senior season with a 9-10 singles record in the spring season. In doubles, she tallied a 7-10 overall record and was named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team for her third consecutive year.
