Tennis Places Four on All-Big 12 Academic Teams
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (April 21, 2015) – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team had four members named to the 2015 All-Big 12 Academic Tennis Teams, announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.
Senior Ikttesh Chahal (exercise physiology), junior Hailey Barrett (sport management) and freshman Lyn Yuen Choo (pharmacy) were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team. Sophomore Kaja Mrgole (sport and exercise psychology) was named to the second team.
“It’s good to see our players being recognized for the academic work they do throughout the year. It is an important part of our program to pursue excellence academically as well,” said coach Miha Lisac. “All four returners have made All-Big 12 Academic Team, which speaks for their level of commitment towards academic. I am looking forward for our team to continue to do well in the future.”
Hailing from Chandigarh, India, Chahal was named to the first team for her third consecutive year. Barrett, a native of Lansing, Michigan, earned first team honors for the second straight year.
A total of 61 Big 12 student-athletes have been named to the 2015 Academic All-Big 12 Tennis teams, with 31 selections make up the women’s team.
The 31-member team is comprised of 35 first team members and six second team selections. Kansas State and Texas led all teams with five honorees each.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshman and transfers are not eligible in their first academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
The Mountaineers (9-12, 0-9) open play at the 2015 Big 12 Tennis Championship on Thursday, April 23, on the Grandstand Courts at the Hurd Tennis Center, in Waco, Texas. The match is set to begin at 10 a.m.
