human being who is obviously respected by the Players and fans alike. I respect the man as a person and a coach, but PSU cannot allow emotion to guide their decision making in search for our new head coach. Our next coach has to have a winning pedigree and nationwide recruiting tentacles. Thirteen years ago I would have loved to see PSU offer Larry Johnson the head coaching job. I think Larry had 20 + years on staff. Not keeping Larry was one of the many mistakes Franklin had made. Whoever our new coach, they should definitely keep Terry for many reasons. He is a Nittany Lion thru and thru.

Pedigree is no guarantee of success, nor is the lack of one always a recipe for failure. I would take my chances with Terry.

Didn't Larry leave when O'Brien took over?

The obstacles he's overcome and the job he has done to turn this team around overcoming two coordinators and lifting the locker room and team out of its doldrums instilling a fighting attitude and a winning mindset is nothing short of remarkable. He would make someone one a helluva HC.

Franklin didn’t let LJ go. LJ took his ball and went home in a huff because he was passed over for the HC job. Meyer recognized his talent as a DL coach and swooped in and grabbed him pretty quick and LJ found a spot where he could torture PSU for years to come.

He has just as much of a chance of doing well as anyone else they hire, except for someone like Urban Meyer, and he's off the table. Kraft is in a difficult position now. When he fired Franklin, the cry was for a national search. Now that PSU has beaten a couple of mediocre teams, and played with some fire, the fans are chanting Terry! Terry! Terry! It's kind of comical.

I agree but PSU is facing complete destruction of its roster and recruits. Right now there’s just not a good enough candidate that would be worth all of that. Give Terry a 3 year deal, fix the coaching staff, invest in the roster

I watched Eli Drinkwitz coach today. I’ll take Terry Smith over him any day
The sky hasn't fallen in that respect just yet. We will see some attrition no doubt it happens every time a HC leave's. But I would wait and see what the next HC can do. Still, imo it will probably be two years before we start to see the best of some things. Patience with the next HC will be a virtue

In that case, he was passed over twice.... As fate would have it, you'd have to admit he got the last laugh.
Yes and no. I feel like Urban and Day used him. They gave him fancy titles, but never advanced his position any higher than DL coach. He was never even promoted to DC and was hired over at OSU several times in that regard also.

Honestly, surely nobody is asking for terry if he didn’t play here. What say thee? And as always, what tv expert do you enjoy?

I was warming up to Smith as HC until last night when he said something along the lines of "this is my locker room."

It was just one quote after an emotional win, so not sure why that gives me pause, but it does.

Point of clarification, I was referring to Franklin's 1 - 10 record against OSU.....

That's just so mind boggling to look at. 3-7 would be disappointing but within the realm of acceptability. And that one win was on a flukey blocked FG run back for a TD. In all other games, I don't think PSU ever seemed a threat to win.

Not quite. Penn State lost by one point in both 2017 and 2018. Both were winnable games. 2023 and 2024 were also within reach, although not as close as 2017 and 2018..

Also, I believe in 2022, Penn State had a 22-16 lead in the 4th quarter before Clifford turned into a turnover machine.

He got the last laugh by continuing to be in the D line coach role for the rest of his career, the role he was trying to get promoted out of at PSU?

It was a bit of an odd statement. I think it was just his attempt to show assertiveness and a desire for the permanent job. He also said some "me" type things in the presser like "I'm a leader of men" and such. I chalk it up to him trying to make a push to be hired and am willing to give him a pass on it.
