Terry Smith, JF, recruiting and this team going forward.

I don't post much but have followed since Scott & Tom started the "Plotit Board". I am a Paternophile as he was scapegoated, but topic for another day.

Terry Smith was great last night. Enthusiasm was great to see; he gave us more of Kaytron, going for it on 4th down multiple times, and we got to finally see Koby Howard make a catch in the middle of the field. Coach Smith has been left in a "difficult" position as there is a severe lack of talent at multiple positions and a coaching staff that has not performed well. While I have great respect for coach Franklin (and for that matter coach O'Brien) for coming to PSU and shepherding us back from the dark times that followed the "Sandusky affair" it is hard to imagine how we got to this point. While I do not mean for this post to be overly critical of coach Franklin or anyone in particular, it would be impossible to move forward not knowing how we got to this point.

1. Coach Franklin's loyalty to players was both admirable and dissatisfying ultimately leading to his dismissal.
Too many players put in positions to fail. They were either not able to handle the physicality or the athleticism at this level.

2. The "myth" that he was a great recruiter is just that a myth. DL, OL & LB recruiting has been abysmal.
Speed while desirable is not the only attribute needed to play Division 1 football.
Dan Conner, Paul P and Sean L are perfect examples of football speed.
For far too long multiple positions were either under recruited or there were too many "misses".
DB recruiting is the only position which was recruited "great" and some of the credit must go to Terry Smith.

In game coaching has left most of us stymied at times. Game management, time management, Assistant coaches & positional situations have lacked a clear understanding of the game. Coach Franklin's refusal to change or adapt to game situations was a major downfall and certainly accelerated Pat Kraft's decision to dismiss Coach Franklin. With this said, I/We owe a debt of gratitude to coach as he has been a substantial steward of PSU.
The question of whether PSU should be an institution that goes "all in" for athletics (Football) or not is germane to coach Franklins dismissal as at the end of the day he is paid to win football games. The argument is that he did win football games at a prodigious rate and while this is true, PSU is and IMHO always will be a program that reaches for the highest goals. To this end Coach Franklin was being paid among all the top coaches in CFB and as such his goal should be championships. Playing in the "big" games and winning the "big" games.

Moving forward, as much as coach Smith deserves a chance to be a HC he is more valuable as DB/Associate HC and certainly deserves to stay on as does coach Pointdexter, Howle and Conner. Whether they do will be up to the next HC but should be given serious consideration. Kotelnicki should be fired immediately. His offense is amateurish at best and incompetent at worst. He sometimes calls the wrong play "all" of the time. It is amazing how proficient he has become at it. Knowles problem is he does not have the horses to run the defensive scheme he wants. He should however match his scheme to his players which is not happening. Barnes & Trautwein have not done anything to improve either DL or OL. We have recruited 4- & 5-star players and very few have panned out or at least improved. Where the hell is Birchmier, Cousins, Williams.? Our OL has not been able to move anyone of the ball. Kaytron does much of the heavy lifting himself. Where are the young LB's? Where are the young WR's?

We all have heard " Allar is no good", our WR's don't get open or run bad routes, Singleton is indecisive, our OL can't block well and our LB's are undersized or can't play at this level & our OC and DC are the worst in CFB. Some of this or maybe all is true and this all falls on the HC. We need an X's & O's coach. Many folks insist because we do not spend as much money as some programs that we can't win or are disadvantage to those programs to. I don't believe this but with better coaching we could have beaten Oregon both years. How many times have we been in a position to beat OSU over the last 10 years and blew it. We should have beaten ND last year if not for bad decisions at the end. We need a coach who knows the game of football not the game of recruiting. You can't be a great recruiter and a bad game day coach but if you are a great game day coach recruits will follow. Now let's get the best coach out there. I will take any of Matt Rhule, Elko, Key & Sumrail to be PSU's next HC
Good post until you lost at Rhule.

It is absolutely true.

There are no assistant coaches on the short list which are all HC's. Even Brohm and Mullen are climbing the list ahead of any assistants. All the hot names have one thing in common they have eastern ties at one time or another. Did Kraft lie when he stated what he wanted in the next HC. He will exhaust all HC's on his list before any assistant gets consideration.
Again your info is different than what I'm hearing. There's multiple coordinators at the top (or near the top) of the list.

We need Tom to share his inside info lol

I think its Rhule. That's why he did it then and knew it would happen at the end of the year.

That concerns me. Rhule just comes across as an underdog guy. Yeah, he won at Temple, but didn't Golden and Addazio? Sure, he turned Baylor around, but they were good before Briles got in trouble and the Big 12 is trash. At Carolina, he sucked. At Nebraska, he's been average. What does he do well that screams "hire me?"

He's an alum and letterman. That's it. I mean, he hired an Air Raid coach (Holgerson) and told him not to install the AR. Why?

I'd rather hire Fleck and say "what do you need?" Because he's done way more with way less than most candidates.

Do you know if Mullen has real interest? Always thought we should go the way of a QB guru given the program's lack of QB development.

If this isn't a home run hire, Kraft should be fired.

And he likely will be if the new coach doesn't win vs ranked teams.

He should be fired if it’s Rhule, who I believe is one of the finalists for the position. I cannot unsee the Friday night Nebraska game and all of the associated statistics of Nebraska 2025. He’s in his third year and that program has deep pockets.

I don't like Rhule as the pick either. If you want somebody like him, I'd prefer Campbell who has done more with less.

Out of curiosity, when you say ‘kick the tires,’ does that usually just mean reaching out to the coach’s agent?

Dumest thing I haver heard. If he didn't already have someone lined up, then he will be out of a job in a few years as well. I also thought it was time for Franklin to go, but you don't make that move, lose recruits and current players just to throw **** at the wall at see what sticks.

Do we have a lack of QB development or did JF keep hiring OC's that didn't fit our QB skill Set?

I really hate to mention this but someone not mentioned yet who may be a candidate is our friend Narduzzi. He seems to be a really good game day coach and seems adept at developing his 2-Star dandies to play above their talent level. He can't recruit at pitt because it is pitt - no fan base, a rented stadium, campus in a ghetto, etc. He might be able to recruit at Penn State. Is Narduzzi a possibility?
I think I need to go the bathroom and throw up. C’mon man.

There isn't currently a home run hire that exists. Every coach has some issues, even a Kirby Smart (can't beat Bama).

Kiffin - loses against all the top 5 type of teams.

Lanning - hasn't beat a great team yet.

Saban - he quit for a reason. He never won until he was buying Unc a car and handing out cash.

Meyer - are we going to give him better resources than OSU? Because he only won a single title there. Also, hasn't meaningfully coached in 7-8 years.

We're gonna have to take a chance on somebody or severely overpay to get anybody currently in a gig. Cignetti has done gotten 2 raises, 1 courtesy of the Franklin firing. Whoever it is, Kraft has hinged his career on them.

I left off Rhule, Campbell, and Drink. I don't think you risk your AD career for them.
Yes Kraft has and deservedly do. He was the AD at Temple but his press release and press conference made it look like this was his first rodeo.

What does it matter? AK was Franklin’s choice and hire. Plus, Franklin was the one individual who had the authority to overrule any and all play calls.

It doesn’t absolve him.
And it doesn’t absolve Terry Smith either big guy. Isn’t he the new guy setting a new course?

Oh so now we WSNT Franklin to meddle. You guys are freaking hilarious. My favorite post was the guy who claimed Smith had “no chance” to beat Iowa because of the lousy roster assembled by Franklin, this despite the fact Penn State lost by 1 pt, had an 11 point second half lead and almost 4 minutes to go down the field to kick a winning FG.

This has been consistent under Franklin but we have OL players that are playing in the pros. I believe the OL have the skills and it is the blocking schemes that are not putting them in the best positions to be successful. Why does it seem like the ball carrier is always making first contact with a defender in the backfield a majority of the time? Even against teams we should man handle, the DL is making contact in our backfield.

Also, as others keep saying, "Franklin is a great recruiter" but is he really? When have our recruiting classes been ranked up in the Top 5 every year? I think the PSU PR machine creates a lot more hype around things then reality when compared to winning programs across the country.

Lastly, I am willing to give Terry Smith a chance. We shouldn't expect all the problems would be fixed in a weeks time(between Northwestern game and Iowa game), that is just not reality. Now, there is a bye week followed by 2 games against the #1 and #2 teams in the country. I do expect to see improvements but I don't expect a win. Can they fix the blocking schemes? Not likely but they need to be willing to. Can they fix the WR routes so WR can create separation? I think so. Only time will tell. I don't see PSU hiring anyone until the season is over.

Where did I state it absolved Terry Smith? My comment was a response to your’s stating Franklin hadn’t been meddling with AK’s playcalling.

Smith gets less blame for the Iowa game as HC than Franklin received for prior games as he didn’t hire AK, and he didn’t acquire any responsibilities about the offense until the Sunday afternoon prior to the Iowa game. That’s just a less time than the previous guy.

If you can't get a Saban or Meyer, go after a guy like Hartline with a 5-year deal. Having played and coached at Ohio State, he understands what it takes to build a winner. Top position coach in the country, great recruiter. PSU will spend to get top coordinators and he will have no shortage of cash to go after guys in the portal until he can build his recruiting base.

You have something lined up so you don't make a huge mistake on the next hire. I guess George Steinbrenner didn't know what he was doing winning all those titles because that thought came from him. Like him or not a bunch of schools would die for what we have had over the past 12 years. You don't dump that for a worse version of it or to take a chance that someone would come. Do you think Billion dollar companies simply put an ad in the newspaper? No, when theyu fire, they know who they gonna hire.

This is incorrect and almost never true. If you're hire someone without conducting interviews you're setting yourself up to fail.
Not sure what Steinbrenner decision you're referring to...he said lots of crazy things though
What do you mean "worse version"? There's no guarantee with any hire. The only certain thing was that change was necessary.

And I don't think any of the coaches responsible are coming our way.

I recently read somewhere that Franklins composite recruiting class ranking over the last 5 years was 14. That’s not even in the top end. He was a good, but not great recruiter, not that good with the X’s and O’s, and a terrible game day coach.

I didn’t state otherwise. I’m just not going to be as harsh to a guy who had 6 days with any responsibilities associated with the offense compared to the guy who had years (and hired AK). I’m not complimenting Smith about Iowa.

There is a degree of criticism. I would criticize Franklin less about Oregon than I would about UCLA and/or NW.

This was not a talent issue. Penn State's blue chip ratio is 68% compared to Iowa's which is 14%. This was coaching malpractice. The same applies to UCLA and Northwestern.
We can agree to disagree.

What we are seeing is that CJFs recruiting was good from an overall standpoint, but....
1. Has too many holes. He was great at recruiting DBs and RBs, but WR, DT and LB are major holes that opponents take advantage of.
2. Scheme and personnel mismatch. I think Allar is the prime example here.

I don't think our talent advantage is what we think it is, because we don't have enough talent in certain areas.
