Perhaps this Texas-to-the-Big Ten thing is more than simple speculation (or wishful thinking).

The Lawrence Journal-World reports today the <font color="#225db7">Big Ten has had preliminary talks with Texas</font> about joining the league. The Big Ten announced in December that it would actively explore the possibility of expansion during the next 12-18 months, but this is the first legitimate report of discussions with another institution.

<p style="PADDING-LEFT: 30px">"There have been preliminary exchanges between the Big Ten and Texas," the source told the Journal-World on Wednesday. "People will deny that, but it's accurate."</p>

As I said last week, the Big Ten <font color="#225db7">would be silly not to gauge Texas' interest</font> in joining the league. Texas is a true home-run addition, much like Notre Dame, and would be an excellent fit both athletically and academically. UT would allow the Big Ten to extend its reach into the south, which would have benefits for both the Big Ten Network and recruiting.

I think the decision here ultimately rests with Texas, which wants to maintain its rivalries with Texas A&M and Oklahoma and make smart financial choices. Texas would have to weigh the increased revenue it would get from the Big Ten against the increased travel costs for playing in the league.

The Big Ten likely wouldn't want to add any more teams if it lures Texas but might have to consider some type of package deal so the Longhorns could keep playing A&M and OU
Why?

That has to be quite possibly the dumbest rumor I've ever read. That's like saying the SEC is looking to add Southern Cal. </p>

and I'm telling you it's possible.

It doesn't make any geographic sense, but conference expansion these days is all about TV deals. The only reason the Big 10 is looking at Texas is because they could bring in multiple huge markets.

If it were to happen though, I'm afraid it would open a huge Pandora's box. Traditionally obviously conferences have been aligned regionally. A Texas jump could be break down the door to conferences simply going for TV markets and throwing tradition out the window.

game is an unattended joke and they have added lots of travel time and expenses for teams and fans alike. Its still funny to me that the ACC didn't want Va. Tech yet they have won three conference championships since joining. Conferences look to the SEC and think they can equal our success simply by going to a 12 team league w/ a championship game. It takes more than that.

For another recent example, just look at the ACC. Boston College doesn't belong in that conference geographically either. It's about 400 miles away from it's nearest conference foe. Not as bad as Texas tothe Big 10, but still.

It's all about money. Big 10 is trying to catch up to the SEC in revenue. Texas would certainly help them. It seems understandable to me that there would be mutual interest, even if nothing comes out of it.

They get to play Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech every year.Penn St. and Ohio St are good teams, but theydraw suchbig TV interest from their rivalry games that I would think it wouldn't be very beneficial to get rid of those. I would think expenses wise to travel to some of the schools they would have to would suck too. Michigan and Penn St aren't exactly close to Texas. </p>

Well, and you have to also remember that before the Virginia legislature forced Va. Tech on the ACC, they were going after Miami, Boston College, and Syracuse. Syracuse got bumped for Va. Tech.

So, the ACC was trying to get Miami for a further dip into the Florida market, and then get into the Boston and NY markets with BC and Syracuse.

The nightmare scenario for the Big 12 would be to lose Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma to the Big 10 (if Texas were to refuse to move unless the Big also invited the other two) and Colorado to the PAC-10, they would be hurting bad for schools to add. Memphis would bring a lot to the table in basketball and not all that much less than a lot of other schools the Big 12 would be able to get in football. Of course, if all that were to happen, the Big 12 may not even wind up keeping its BCS status.

The B12 isn't going to lose 3 teams in one year, much less three of its top programs, honestly i don't see TX going anywhere. This is just the B10 taking a stab in the dark.

I'm more of a scoffer than one who laughs</p>

some of the SEC west to Big 12, I know that's crazy, but Texas is actually pushing the Big 10 from the news reports today.

Don't you need some patsies to prop up the top teams in your conference?I can see how a UT or UF would be interested in this, butit seems like some of the big schools would always be against it. It would be a death noll for a Michigan, who would not be able to sustain success if it didn't get to load up against patsies. No matter how good the conference is, will people not from the school really get excited about a team that is middle of the pack?

If I recall, Texas already has the largest sports income stream is the whole friggin college sports world.... #1.
They already have the $.
Joining with the Big Ten would put their fans in a position to travel much farther to go to away games.., no close neighbor games.
I'll be surprised if this gets off the ground, it goes against the grain.
