Some 250 MSU fans responded to a request for their assessment of Croom in clarionledger.com's MSU sports blog late last week and were encouraged to e-mail again if the Arkansas result changed their minds.</p>

The results were mixed.</p>

Thomas Flynt, 42, of Starkville, wrote that he wants "everyone gone as soon as the clock reads 00:00 at Vaught-Hemingway," but might continue to support the team if a staff overhaul is made.</p>

Chris Sowell, 30, of Starkville, acknowledged MSU's offensive struggles and said they needed to be addressed. But, he wrote "Coach Croom is the BEST thing that has happened to this great university at least in my lifetime. I will support him indefinitely."</p>

Few would argue they could provide a remotely scientific survey of the fan base as a whole. <span style="font-weight: bold;">And an hour after the blog entry, members of the sixpackspeak.com message board</span>, many of whom have been among Croom's most vocal critics, were openly campaigning for their members to send e-mails.</p>

Any guess as to which sheep this is?

What a tool.

You got 250+ emails and you quote two media members and four other dudes for one sentence each? You had almost as many "no comments" as you had comments. Waaaay too much space devoted to recapping history. Anyone reading this already knows about last year, the bowl game, the contract, the Tech game, McCorvey, attendance, etc..... Wasted space. Could have been summarized in two paragraphs with the rest of the space devoted to sentiment. I thought we were promised a more comprehensive pulse of the MSU fanbase.

<span style="font-style: italic;">("</span><font style="font-style: italic;" size="2" face="georgia, palatino">But here at The Blog, we're not going to let those hurdles stop us from trying our best to get an as firm-as-can-be grip on the public sentiment as MSU heads into a critical next few days and weeks for the future of the program.")

</font><font size="2" face="georgia, palatino">We got none of that. I know you said it wasn't a poll, but were the responses you got from the rank and file evenly split like your quotes (two for Croom to return, two for him to go)? What were the most frequent reasons people gave for wanting to retain or release Croom?

</font>Great idea, but one of the most disappointing pieces I have read from you.

Disappointing article. I hope Kyle's article was stymied by higher ups at the Clarion-Ledger. If not, he didn't deliver any grip on the public sentiment of the fanbase.

I was really looking forward to seeing the article. Now I remember why I stopped getting the newspaper 10 years ago.

And much like everything else related to MSU, I was extremely disappointed. Kyle is by far my favorite beat writer, so I can only hope that the higher-ups watered it down.

KV should have waited to write this and gather his input on Monday of next week. After we get our asses handed to us by Ole Miss, only the wooliest of the sheep will still defend Croom and Co. Our fans are completely okay with mediocracy as long as OM is in the same ballpark as us. After we get waxed and Ole Miss goes to the Cotton Bowl, the sheep will turn. Our supporters are so resistant to change, the only thing that put them over the edge is if Ole Miss is clearly better than us.

I pray that Ole Miss skull drags us across the field Friday. And what's sad is I don't even feel guilty about thinking this way. In my mind, that's the only way we are going to make any changes and have a chance at having a decent football team in the near future. </p>

In Kyle's defense, I don't think the purpose of the article was to show reasons of why Croom should be fired.

He said he didn't want to do a poll, so he would do a story to reflect the pulse of the fanbase. Then he spent half of his space recapping history. The interesting part of this story - the part that gets people talking - is WHY someone feels the way they do, not THAT they feel like they do. We all know people have different opinions. Again, the story is WHY people have those opinions.

What do I know though. I only have a journalism degree and worked in the industry for a few years.

If you take time to read the comments on the CL website it will make you sick to your stomach. Our fan base is the sorriest bunch of loosers, and you know what, as long as they continue to think like that, we will never be any good. They think that last year is all we deserve, and that even that was amazing and gift from above. One guy on there wrote that MSU cant go to a bowl every year, it just cant happen.

SCREW THEM. Im not expecting to win the damn SEC every year, but dammit, I expect to field a competative team and at least go to Birmingham or Shrevport or Memphis. MSU is better than this, but our fan base still doesent see it.

Greg Byrne, go against the idiots and end the misery now, make a name for yourself and take MSU to the top, or at least mediocrity, which some of our fans will not know how to handle.
