Thanks Ole Miss for making the state look like 1965...

I cannot for the life of me figure out why Dixie and other songs with those sorts of connotations don't incite a lot more problems with black kids at Ole Miss. Or, for that matter, frankly, why so many black kids even go there. They have given lip service to erasing the past issues, but in reality, the school officially (through its band) still constantly plays reminders of it.

he seemed to not like that query provided by HD6 for some reason. He got rather upset in pregame.

This is the same as the Trooper Taylor incident. In case yall do not remember, before the WVU game he came up to a player stretching while being mic'ed up saying you are my ni***. This clip was shown at the start of the 4th qtr. Granted if it was foul, they had about 3 hrs to look at the tape because the even had a rain delay for at least an hour. The media will do anything to bring us down in the South. When you are at the top they always want to bring you down.

Please, going by number and nature of the comments I overheard at various tailgates about the President of the United States I would say Ole Miss has plenty of company at Dear Old State.

we're not going to change opinions here, on this insignificant, pissant, good-for-nothing message board (sorry DS), but let's face it, OM is what it is, and MSU likewise. And like it or not, brothas and sistas like Oxford. Whether you can "for the life of you" figure it out or not.

I don't want this turning into a MSU/OM thing but seriously how could you go to a school that embraces the Confederacy in ever facet of it's tradition? "Rebels"? Dixie? Rebel Flags? I just don't get it.

when the band plays Dixie ALL the 17ing time. And all the other Civil War-era songs that are played, like the article mentions. I'm not trying to change opinions. Just stating my own. And ya'll get awfully defensive when the subject is brought up. With good reason, I suppose. I would cringe every time that song was played while 60,000 white people in khakis (or red pants, whichever is preferred) watched 20 black kids playing football below. But that's me. For ya'll, I guess old times really aren't forgotten. Just bring back the damn battle flags and be done with it.

To stop saying "The South Will Rise Again" is one thing, which I mainly agree with cause its so freakin gay and reminds me of rednecks in highschool. But I still can't believe they got rid of Colonel Reb. Makes me think their chancellor at the time (was it Khayat then?) was a giant bleeding ******.

The North didn't have slaves? Hell, they made their slaves fight. My favorite part of the Ole Miss/State game is when they play Dixie. I stand for it. I wish the constitution meant something..and that the federal government provided for the common defense but that the states did everything else. Then it's up to you what state you live in. THAT was what the south was fighting for. Lock it up.

Why not Starkville? With all it and, say, Columbus, have to offer.

Candidly, we've gotten into a silly little message board war. And if we were both being honest (assuming you've been to Oxford), we'd agree that both OM and MSU are pretty cool places to attend college. Unless you enjoy music, food, and cultural stimulation. In that case we'd have to eliminate Starkville (God rest my grandmother-in-law's soul, she'd kill me if she could read this. But she's dead so no worries. I believe there's a building named after Paul Dunn there in Starkville, and since that's my grandfather-in-law I suppose I should feel bad on that account too). And I do feel bad. I feel bad that a few hours ago I told Costanza that Florida State was going to beat UNC, even as he asked "Are you watching the same game as I am???!!" Well, yes, yes I was.

you aren't cheating until you get caught. No one knew about the saying until a national article is written about it.

Very weak.

Almost every band that plays in Starkville or Oxford goes to the other the next night or weekend.

Food is a wash.

We sell the same beer you do.

As far as cultural stimulation, you are right. We've had no riots or race incidents.

I hear that those are very stimulating.

there are many reasons I didn't want to go to UM, and I won't claim that this was one of the biggest, but stuff like this was one of them.

Play some Dixie, wave some confederate flags, cheer on good ole Col. Reb...it never sat right with me.

Typical attitude of you folks. Oxford is a podunk town, no better or worse than most little towns in Mississippi. One could wonder why Starkville's population is larger than Oxford's (by a considerable percentage) if Oxford is the mecca of culture that you claim it to be. You have a restaurant or two and a dead author's house. Awesome. Starkville has plenty of food, music and art as well. The superior attitude is why people hate you, for the record.

And when it was 24-6 and FSU looked like total ***, I'm pretty sure I was not the only person that thought UNC would run away with this game.

there's something disconcerting about 60k whiteys cheering on their black football players while Civil War-era songs play almost constantly from their band. It's like they are trying to imagine how it felt on the plantation.

"The fact is, the phrase 'The South Will Rise Again' is not part of our tradition or spirit, and it is inconsistent with the university's values and what Ole Miss stands for -- a great public university with a focus on the future," Jones said in a phone interview Thursday from the campus in Oxford.</p>
********.

"The South Will Rise Again" is a huge part of your spirit & tradition.

And it's very consistent with the university's values & what Ole Miss stands for.

What's sad is that to make Ole Miss nationally palatable, Ole Miss officials & representatives are forced to lie about how a large percentage of Ole Miss students perceive Ole Miss.
