Was the stadium in place before they moved into their home? Is it relatively the same structure?
Yes and Yes. This has been brought up many times when NU was scheduling an event or adding to the facilities.
I mean I get that the nearby residents will complain about construction and all but:
1) The capacity is likely going down significantly (probably down at least 3000-5000). That should be a positive for residents nearby in the long term.
2) It's going to be built on the same spot with a similar footprint in terms of height, which means no major net negative effect. It'll have much stronger permanent lighting and multiple screens I guess, but that shouldn't project outwards significantly.

Evanston is the birthplace of some of the greatest whiney, nanny, NIMBY, busybodies in American history, and they seem to work overtime to constantly live up to that legacy. I'm sure Derick Gragg has a lot of Leslie Knope moments in his future.
For sure, but somehow we got the Fieldhouse done, which was a much harder project to get off the ground given its location and use of lakefront property.
It still amazes me we even got that done. If we could get that done, Ryan Field rebuild should not be an impossible lift. There will be a lot of whining for sure, but we're not asking for anything unreasonable.
Evanston residents can be a pain in the butt. I don't get it. They knew the university was there when they moved there. They knew the stadium was there when they moved there. They knew (or should have known) the inconveniences that come with living near a major university.

Evanston is bad but trust me it is a drop in the bucket of the NIMBY world. As my 50 year career was in the world of getting infrastructure and facilities designed and built, I have witnessed the dramatic decline in the ability to get a project completed in a reasonable time frame and cost, if completed at all. Non-industry people tell me that this has been all for the benefit of the environment, etc, but basically this is BS as fundamentally there are two camps - those that welcome change and those that don't. The US has pretty much lost the war as the exciting projects are occuring elsewhere. Sure some exceptions but it takes an extraordinarily stubborn entity to take on the forces against change.
My guess is NU will get the stadium built utilizing the concept of a preexisting right, but the solution will involve a boatload of comprises that will result in a less than optimum solution and the expenditure of precious money for placating unreasonable demands.

Evanston/Wilmette Residents have been successful in prevention of professional sports and non colligate & HS Events. Small restricted concerts have been permitted under the former city council and former mayor/city manager.
I believe Dyche/Ryan wasn't changed much previously during last renovation is due to an ordinance regarding landmark status, etc. I'm researching further.
I do know that WIlmette residents threatened a lawsuit when the new scoreboard went up in the baseball field. That was resolved after a period of time.
I was born reared and raised in Evanston, and brother do they complain around and about NU. Some of the same people complaining reside on Asbury for example, are the same people who charge for parking on their front lawns for football games.
Remember the ban on Golf Course Parking for Football Games? Well that was the NIMBY's around there. It's only 6-7 Home Games......so my fellow Evanstonians need to stop *itching. Wilmette too!!
