By doing what was unthinkable a few weeks ago and finishing 15-15 in baseball league play, MSU has at least one of the Big 3 sports (baseball, MBB, football) finish at or above .500 in conference play for the 40th consecutive academic year.

1985-1986 was the last time it did not happen.

This surprises me. Gotta be a lot of years where the .500 record in one sport was what got it done.

And another fun fact….of those 22 times in basketball, 5 of them were the past 5 seasons. We gave finished exactly 8-10 for each of the past 5 years, which is also interesting. The last 3 of those, of course, we still made the NCAA tournament.

Off-hand:

- Each of the last 3 years in basketball

- At least twice in baseball:

1998 we finished 14-15 in SEC play, and dead last in the SEC West. We still made the tourney, and went to Omaha. That was the final year of the old 48-team format.

Sometime in early / mid 2000’s we went like 12-17, but had a really strong SOS. Snuck in as a 3-seed, but didn’t do much.

I don’t think any of the below .500 teams ever won the SEC tournament….except maybe baseball in the 80’s or something.

If I remember correctly the Regional Host team got an automictic bid to play in the NCAA in baseball. The host sights were based on home attendance. You were not necessarily the number one seed at home. I could be incorrect. Thats 30 years ago.

I think it was based on bidding versus home attendance.
