Morgantown, West Virginia – Late Sunday night, Power 5 conferences have started discussions towards canceling the college football season. Conference meetings are planned for this week and it’s become common knowledge that these meetings will result in the postponement or cancellation of the upcoming season.
Unfortunately, many commissioners of the Power 5 conferences believe that is is simply too unsafe to play Fall sports due to the coronavirus pandemic. Although no final decisions have been made, it doesn’t appear that football will happen this Fall.
However, an interesting movement has started by college football players. Multiple players throughout the country posted messages on social media with the hashtag “We Want to Play.”
West Virginia redshirt sophomore offensive lineman James Gmiter spoke out, saying, “The medical staff for WVU athletics and WVU medicine are top tier and elite in every aspect. Not to mention the precautions that Neal Brown and our strength staff have put in place not just for our safety but our families are the best in the country and that’s a fact.”

Sophomore wide receiver Winston Wright, who is on the verge of a breakout season for the Mountaineers, said the following: “(I) put in too much work to not cash in this check on Saturdays.”

Gmiter and Wright are just a couple of the many Mountaineers that made it loud and clear – they want to play football this Fall! While the players’ opinions will be heard, it’s unlikely that it will sway the decision from the conference commissioners, who are concerned about potential lawsuits and damage to the universities they are employed by.
