The 2011 Cards are reminding me of The 2006 Cards...

ever.

I was actually worried about Wainwright in game seven of the NLCS- you could tell he was scared for a little bit out there. He made a great pitch to get Beltran out to close the thing down.

Motte is more of a traditional closer. I've been saying he should close since April. The announcers keep talking about the bullpen blowing saves and leads- yeah- when LaRussa kept trotting Franklin out there. That's not going to happen now.

They put Motte in the closer role and all of a sudden, they magically start winning a bunch of games. It also helped that they dumped their entire bullpen and acquired the Blue Jays bullpen. I've got to admit- I find it pretty funny that Colby Rasmus goes to Toronto where they were going to allow him to "listen to his Dad" and he ends up hitting below the Mendoza line for them. Thanks Dad! Maybe there was a reason why LaRussa didn't want his Dad coaching him after all.

This team wins the Central easy if they have Wainwright healthy, though. It is what it is.

In the post season, and that is the way Motte is pitching. Of course Wainwright had the hook and Motte has the heat!

That was what he struck Inge out on to end the World Series in 06. It's not the best slider in the world, but it's a good secondary pitch for him and it compliments his fastball, curve, and change-up.

I'll never forget that game seven in the NLCS against the Mets.

That catch by Endy Chavez was unreal. I also remember Yadier Molina's home run to put the Cardinals ahead- I waited until I saw the ball bounce around on the ground behind the fence before I celebrated because of that catch. I thought Chavez was going to get that one too! And then Wainwright loads the bases with a two run lead, and I look at his eyes, and I'm thinking- crap he's scared, get the pitching coach out there! Duncan calms him down, and then Beltran gets up there and he struck him out. Before and after that, Wainwright was fine. I think he just got caught up in the moment a little bit for whatever reason.

I also remember all of the New Yorkers literally praying in the stands during the 9th inning, and grown men crying when it was over. I've never seen that before.

It was one of the most clutch catches I have ever seen, but mostly forgotten because The Mets didn't win. I was lucky enough to be at the final two games to see them win it. Good times!

the playoffs though...

The 2006 team almost blew a double digit lead to Astros in the last month.... when the playoffs started, their pitching staff carried them to the the title.

This team, as everyone knows, couldn't put it all together until the last week in August and they've been close to unbeatable in that time frame.

Hopefully, they can continue what they've got going... they're playing very, very well, especially the bullpen.
