I swear I have had no less than 8 Bears I know talk about their passion for the baseball team and how they gave the game and series away to us on Sunday.<div>
</div><div>Heard nary a peep on the Egg Bowl or splitting basketball with them this year. Or last year. Or the year before.</div><div>
</div><div>I guess baseball is the only thing worthwhile up there over the last several years. Not that they have been to Omaha or anything even with their best teams. Love them some baseball though.</div>

Bc they're interested? No. Because they know we will suck and they should beat us? Yes. They only show interest in the sports that they feel they are better than us in. That's why you're getting the "we gave the series away" comments, and also why you heard nothing during football. They still feel they will go further than us in baseball, so their interest is still there for the moment. When they bail out of a Regional early, they will begin talking recrootin smack, and 2014 football smack. Why? Bc they know they will sign Conner so they will get the best player in the state, and bc 2014 is smack that they can't be deemed wrong about within the next calendar year.

"Swayze is the best atmosphere in America"

This is so typical of the OM false sense of superiority. The average OM fan really believes that Swayze and the grove are the best places to watch college sports. When they build the new basketball arena, it will be the best too, book it. It's just funny now regarding the OM fan base attitude toward baseball b/c my dad tells me his whole life that any OM fan was quick to point out that baseball didnt matter. Now, not only does it matter but there is no better place to watch it than Oxford...

My main point is that instead of being ok with Swayze being a great time, they have to declare it "the best in America"

Had a bear neighbor in Columbus that 'suddenly' became a huge basketball fan & season ticket holder in '70 or '71 when Johnny Neumann was there for that one year. He later 're-signed' for the Stroud years. Pretty funny really ... Only made 200 mile round trip when he thought they would have a chance to win.

Guess one could also say that State fans really only became 'passionate' about baseball 'after' Ron Polk brought winning baseball to MSU. We got spoiled over the years and thought that no matter how bad football or basketball was, we always had 'winning' baseball. It was the one 'reliable' in Mississippi State sports.

But, I will also add that State has had a huge number of 'loyal' fans that have been supporting sorry teams for many years.

atmosphere up there for the last 5 or 6 years. Furthermore, if you are trying to compare MSU and UM baseball atmosphere, the truth is obvious.

...while Polk was coach. The Left Field Lounge was started while Gregory was coach & I seem to recall an article or two talking about the fan support MSU had during his tenure (no 10,000 spectator games, but there were some 5,000-6,000 games).

...in Mississippi. Ole Miss drew crowds on 10 dates of 3,500+ in old University Park/Swayze Field through 1988 (Oxford-University Stadium opened in 1989.) In the famous 1970 season finale series in Oxford, there were around5,000 for each game between UM and MSU to determine the SEC West champion, which set attendancerecords for baseball in Mississippi. SRO was sold and the field was roped off with people 4-5 deep down the lines. Ole Miss had to sweep to win the division, and won both ends of the Friday DH.State avoided the sweep on Saturday with ashutout by Brantley Jones (who famously flipped off Rebel fans after the final out).

The next year, 1971, MSU hosted Ole Miss in the first-ever night games at Dudy Noble Field, blowing the attendance records out of the water with about 9,000 per game. The 1964-1972 era was magical for baseball in the Magnolia State, as MSU (4) and Ole Miss (3) won 7 SEC Titles in the 9-year span. People in "our state", at both schools, have cared about baseball for a long time, and for longer than anywhere else in the SEC.

Ididn't realize how muchthe state of Mississippi dominated SEC baseball so much during that era. We also combined for 4 CWS appearances (3 for UM, 1 for MSU) in those 9 years.
