The Cam Newton thread got me to thinking

about scheduling. A couple of posters talked about how difficult it is for MSU to outrecruit the big name schools for a highly coveted player, especially when we aren't winning more than we lose. They mentioned consistently putting up more W's up than L's and the positive effects it would have on recruiting. I remember back when Jackie had a pretty good run and any MSU message board you looked at, quite a few people were wanting to schedule Southern Cal, Oklahoma, Texas, etc. etc. I propose that it be sixpack law that any fan that calls for us to schedule a team any better than memphis or middle tenn. be banned!! I don't care if we win the national title, it should be law that we schedule the easiest possible games that we can. That is why i dont understand all of the excitement about playing usm down the road. It won't be a gimme. Hell, alabama schedules nothing but sure W's and they are about to win the national title. The rest of the SEC understands how to schedule, lets try to do the same.

and in fact not only is USM no gimme, we will be their biggest game of the year. There will be no other positive to playing them other than ticket sales.

Who would have thought that GT would be around a top 10 team. I know that we have lost to Houston before but they were never as good as they were this year. Our problem is we cannot afford to pay teams to have a home and home. That is why we went to MTSU and will go to Houston in the future. I think that one decent OCC game is not all bad but it needs to be to start the season. We need cupcake games for the sandwich games in the middle of the season.

but they have played Clemson, Va Tech and will play Penn State next yr.
Until last year though, trying to overcome their "probation", they didnt schedule very tough and while I do like the big time inter-sectional games, we need 4 OOC wins badly every year in the next 2-4 years before we should even consider it again.

I say have one big game and then three gimmies. As in 1 FCS and two teams from the SunBelt or something (not named Troy).

That way, if you lose to the big team (as in Texas A&M, OK State, Florida State, heck, even some big boys maybe like Texas or OU) it doesn't really hurt you and if you can pull it off it is good exposure. But teams like that probably don't want to play us anyway for exactly why I said I want to play them.

Again, this would be really on down the road. And only when you can expect 8-9 wins a year without having to win 4 OOC games.

even though most of them are a rival, it is still a tough ooc game.

Florida - FSU and sometimes Miami too
Georgia - Ga Tech
Kentucky - Louisville (hit or miss on good, it's still a rival)
Arkansas usually tries to play one of their old SWC rivals like Texas or TAM
South Carolina plays Clemson who is almost always a bowl team
UT is pretty good about scheduling a pac-10 team like ucla or cal, or notre dame just about every year

however, in my opinion Ole Miss, LSU, Auburn, us, and generally bama schedule pretty poorly. Vandy does too, but they need all the wins they can get.
