and he said the Ath Dept had a study done and found the highest decibel level of the stadium is where the SEC brass sits at Davis Wade.

Since we seem to have a decent coach and appear to be getting better, this was bound to reappear. As long as we were a Sly Croom team....no problem. We were going to get our brains beat out. But, any glimmer of improvement and threat to the "chosen" teams brings out the complaints. <17> them...and the horse they rode in on.

The problem is, how do they define what's excessive? My guess is, they'll force us to start confiscating cowbells at the gate.

Here is Scott's chance to prove to the doubters wrong. He stands up for our traditionand he'll gain a lot of respect. He bows down like LT and he may be the shortest tenured AD in MSU history.

One more thing. 17 you Mike Slive.

Dr. Keenum has been and is prepared to fight this to the death. He is passionate about this and has talked with Slive about it on multiple occasions.
The argument is that "well, MSU is breaking a rule, and the SEC can't just turn a blind eye to a member institution disregarding a rule." The fact is that there are several SEC rules that are broken every time one of their institutions takes the field (Alcohol, Ticket Scalping, etc...) So if they are going to punish us for breaking a rule, they sure as hell better be ready to fine or punish every other SEC school for ANY rule violation, because a rule is a rule and none are more severe than others.
The university has done studies on decibel levels in SEC stadiums, and MSU does not rank in the top half even with all of those dreaded cowbells.
This is simply an issue of trying to keep the small school down, and now is the time to stand up and call ********. If the penalty is a fine, I say take up a collection at the gate, and put me down for $100 per game. I am not a big cowbell ringer, nor do I enjoy someone ringing one in my ear all game long, but damnit this is an attack on all hings MSU. Cowbells are part of our university, and can not be taken away just because little ole MSU seems to be on the rise. The SEC has 12 institutions that are all supposedly equal in the eyes of the conference, and now is the time to demand that we be treated as such.

All you have to do is make sure it isn't showing, and they won't say anything to you. Same goes for whiskey. Put it in your back pocket, pull your shirt tail over it, and walk right in.

Here is something for the Godalmighty SEC, If the SEC pull bonehead moves like theSidney's case or Jackie's casemember schools should vote to fine the SEC for monies spent to defend themselves for baseless charges. The cowbell issue is a smoke monster for something else. No one said a thing about red shoes and whiskey bottles. 17 them all!!!!!!

Is it not possible that this has something to do with the guy who used his cowbell to beat the **** out of someone last season?

I had tucked it in the back of my pants and pulled my shirttail over it. I went in the gate by the MClub. Just inside that gate, there is an upslope. Evidently, as I started up that slope I leaned forward slightly, causing the edge of the bell to show through the back of my shirt. They stopped me and made me check my bell in.<div>
</div><div>The rest of the year I didn't have nearly as much trouble. There were a couple of games where they really looked me over hard, but for the most part it was better. Some folks just feel the need to exert any power given to them, I guess.</div>

I mean.. taking emotion out of it, the cowbell issue seems like a petty hill for the president of a university to die on.

I'm afraid if the SEC wants the bells, they'll get the bells.. as much as we all hate it.

No. It has to do with whining and bitching from other ADs, as it has for - what? - 40 years or so. It started with Shug Jordan at Auburn. Like someone else said, it's a pattern -- it periodically comes up, but only if there's the threat of us winning some games.

I bet I could hurt someone pretty bad with a tide box and a roll of toilet paper on a stick if I set my mind to it. I think I could choke someone with a flag. Hell, I could probably put an eye out with one of those foam fingers. I don't think it has to do with the cowbell being a dangerous weapon.

now that there is actually some momentum with our football program again, it's a problem with other SEC schools.

Do you at least acknowledge that it's a legit gripe? I thought the SEC made 'Bama stop playing the elephant noise on 3rd downs, and South Carolina was stripped of something similar. I can't think of a single other BCS conference school whose fanbase uses artificial noisemakers to the point that State does, and it's a legitimate beef.

I know it's an emotional issue, but y'all are pulling out the black helicopter talk when the rest of the country considers it a tacky way of compensating for a lack of a loud crowd otherwise.

you have to have momentum to have attendance.

The rest of the country in no way considers it tacky. Hell, it's considered by most to be a top 20 tradition in college football. It's just the SEC.

he was discussing this with a group around the first of the year.
On an issue like this, the President has to stand up for the university, fans, and alumni. Even fans of other schools will admit that the cowbell issue is a direct shot at MSU, and only dislike them because "they are annoying." I have been to every other SEC stadium for a game, and not once have I found the environment to be completely accommodating to me as a visiting fan.

Oh and because you can't think of any other school that uses artificial noisemakers (legally, mind you) then we shouldn't be able to use one of our oldest traditions either. Yeah, that makes a ton of sense.

Sidenote: Bama's elephant and SC's rooster were electronic sounds and piped through the speakers. Apples to oranges.

So if each fan has a a recording of cowbells that each plays on a boombox in the stadium, that's suddenly different than people ringing bells?<div>
</div><div>I don't think that's apples to oranges. The two are very similar. You can clap your hands, stomp your feet or yell.</div><div>
</div><div>I can't think of any other school that uses artificial noisemakers to the extent that State does either. Can you?</div><div>
</div><div>Here's my question. Where does this stop? Let's say Bama fans all bring in snare drums and symbols. In that case nobody would be able to hear anything on the field, not to mention anything after the game. You wouldn't have a legitimate gripe if every OM fan brought in an airhorn and blasted them during third downs in Oxford next year?</div><div>
</div><div>The only difference is the tradition and the participation.</div>

Because that's exactly why you don't see any flags at VH anymore. They can't ban the flag, but they banned sticks, saying they were dangerous. I would imagine 5 lbs.of steel is much more dangerous than a wooden stick. And now there is documented proof.

I think you are right, though. No one really cares when you win 3 games a year, so y'all getting better is probably the motivation for it. But if they do get banned, I think you'll look back on it and blame last year's dipshit as the excuse the SEC uses to get rid of them.

The average cowbell isn't anywhere near five pounds, man.

And this is my point. The motivation behind banning cowbells might be because the SEC finds it unfair, but the excuse they use will be for safety.
